Pysychology 101 in a more subtle way.

This is like psychology 101 but with rather simpler approach on just knowing clues and guides on analyzing how people's action are. Body language was discussed and its subtopics and how it is relevant to one's personalities. The key points provided summary as to how you can read a person by just knowing how they act or how their action is. Of course everything must be done discreetly and in a subtle way as not to offend the person you analyzes. Overall this is rather an interesting book, like more of reading people but with a much simpler and quick approach. What I've learned on this book is an opportunity for whatever comes my way as I can use this analyzing skills to my advantage.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. If they used normal print and normal spacing this "book" would be 3 pages long. Written like an email scam. Example: "You don't to make random guesses at this. Yes can learn what facial expressions mean what."

Just bought this for amusement and ended up tossing it in anger. Do not waste you money.

Too high level to be practical

The book is extremely high level to be practical or useful. Take the tunneling chapter for example, in the tunneling chapter, tunneling is only explained. No methods or ideas are ever brought up as to how to detect it or investigate it.

The some sections do have tools , but even these sections aren't useful. The author painfully does a step by step process that literally just acts as filler for the book as it fills it with screenshots. I mean who hasn't gone through a click click next next installer?

If you are a manager who has just transitioned to the incident response side and want to get your hands wet to understand what your employees are doing this book is for you! For everyone else trying to actually solve this problem on a network with more than one PC and needs a deeper understanding of the subject ... This book may not be for you.

He provides a taxonomy capable of accommodating Faust, Moby-Dick, The Nibelung’s Ring, Ulysses, The Cantos, The Waste Land, The Man Without Qualities and One Hundred Years of Solitude.

For Moretti the significance of the modern epic reaches well beyond the aesthetic sphere: it is the form that represents the European domination of the planet, and establishes a solid consent around it. Political ambition and formal inventiveness are here continuously entwined, as the representation of the world system stimulates the technical breakthroughs of polyphony, reverie and leitmotif; of the stream of consciousness, collage and complexity.

Opening with an analysis of Goethe’s Faust�and the different historical roles of epic and the novel, Moretti moves through a discussion of Wagner’s Ring�and on to a sociology of modernist technique. He ends with a fascinating interpretation of “magic realism” as a compromise formation between a number of modernist devices and the return of narrative interest, and suggests that the west’s enthusiastic reception of these texts (and One Hundred Years of Solitude�in particular) constitutes a ritual self-absolution for centuries of colonialism.

The Story of the World

Modern Epic is a formidable epic in and of itself. There is something almost evil about the way Professor Moretti reconstructs the occult roads of the literary and political chaos we call Modernism. Moretti begins by doubting the coherence of the term Modernism - the irreconcilability of texts as different as Ulysses and Metamorphosis. He then suggests that one of the major achievements (and quests) of writers from Goethe to the present is to create world-texts, scriptures, anachronistic verbal beasts that are essentially forms of epic literature. As primary epics have foundational relationships to various cultures one can see Moretti's point when he asserts that writers like Goethe, Wagner, Pound, Joyce, and the neglected master Imre Madach have agendas that are almost luciferian. For my part I cannot go with Moretti who prefers culture over wisdom but I am seduced by what I see as a program he describes in his book - the quest for a universal mythology - the epic story of humanity written from the periphery. Moretti discovers the epic nature of "One Hundred Years Of Solitude" which was written from the global periphery as most epics are. And epics such as "One Hundred Years Of Solitude" show the literary spirit at its most clear and visionary - as distinct from national novels of manners.

World literature is the cultural dominance. Vacations into national literatures or subcultural literatures have their charm but world literature and its movement through the modern epic is where the cultural spirit is at its most intense and relevant.

Excellent Scholarly Work

Illuminating ideas, brilliant prose, this book was as informative as a lot of fun to read. Highly recommended to anyone with an interested in Modernism, or just curious about major and intractable literary works such as Ulysses, The Man Without Qualities..

Surprisingly interesting and easy to read for a textbook.

First off, let me say, this book is a textbook. If you are looking for a fun book to pick up and lose yourself in, this isn't it. But if you are looking for a book that will really help you understand how a young child, usually with no direct instruction, can go from being non-communicative at birth to being able to communicate in mostly correct and complete sentences by age four, this is for you.

I had to read this entire book, cover to cover, for a college class, and I did enjoy it. Yes, I was reading a textbook, but the material is interesting and the author puts in a LOT of real-life examples which really helped to keep me interested and engaged. I learn well through example, and every topic had one or more stories of experiments done on children or studies done on children to illustrate the concept being discussed. I loved this, as it really made the topics comprehensible and fascinating for me!

I also appreciated that the author presented multiple theories for everything. I'm not sure which theory Hoff subscribes to, because she presented a wide variety in a balanced way. I feel this gave me a fuller understanding of the field.

It did get dry at times. The author did go into detail on EVERYTHING. But that is because this is an introductory book covering a HUGE spectrum of information intended for those who have no background in it. So, for me, I needed that information. There was very little where I wished the author would just get on with it, in general if I got overwhelmed it was at the sheer amount of information contained in the pages.

This was, by far, my best text book this semester. It was accurate, it was interesting (for a textbook), and I feel like I have walked away with a lot of great information from reading it.

I'M USING THIS BOOK AS A TEXT FOR MY LINGISTICS CLASS, AND I FIND THAT IT'S QUITE DISORGANISED. ASSIGNED READINGS FOR A PARTICULAR TOPIC HAVE TO COME FROM PORTIONS OF DIFFERENT CHAPTERS BECAUSE OF THE WAY HOFF SET UP HER CHAPTERS.

About the Author

C. Alexander Simpkins, PhD, and Annellen M. Simpkins, PhD, are psychologists specializing in meditation, hypnotherapy, and neuroscience. The Simpkins are authors of twenty-seven books, including a number of titles on Taoism: Simple Taoism, Tao in Ten, and most recently, The Dao of Neuroscience. They also have authored many books on the therapeutic application of meditation, including Zen Meditation in Psychotherapy, Meditation and Yoga in Psychotherapy, and Meditation for Therapists and Their Clients. In addition, they have a newly released book on neuroscience, Neuroscience for Clinicians. Their books have been published in more than twenty foreign editions and have won many awards.

The Simpkins regularly present seminars on meditation, hypnosis, and neuroscience worldwide to professionals and the public, and have performed research on therapeutic effectiveness using unconscious methods. Currently, the Simpkins are engaged in research on the unconscious movement. They practice and teach their own martial art, Tae Chun Do, combining meditation with movement. BPSO Bipolar 2 Significant Other Review

In trying to learn more about my loved-one with BPDII (Bipolar 2 Disorder), I purchased this book along with many others on the subject. This was, by far, the best one. The other books I purchased seemed to cover similar information (all available for free online) and I still cant distinguish what made each one different from the last.

This book went a step further, explaining the science behind BPD in greater depth without overwhelming the non-scientist.

While the other books I read refer to the disorder as a "chemical imbalance" and pretty much leave it at that, this one explains the processes clearly and concisely. It is written for the person living with BPD to use as an adjunct to current therapies (and should not replace any medications, of course). The book offers concrete lessons and suggestions that are simple to start and easy to use.

I found the techniques and information to be a useful gift I could offer my loved one to help him manage his symptoms when he is ready. Sometimes people with this disorder find it hard to focus on reading or may feel overwhelmed easily so caretakers may wish to read the book first and share insights and practices in bite-sized pieces at appropriate times.

As the partner of someone with BiPolar Disorder, I also found the information in this book helpful for myself. Personally, I do not suffer from BPD but found the lessons useful to calm my own overactive/anxious brain. I now feel that I understand the disorder better, have more insight about what to expect in the future and believe that the Bipolar Disorder can not only be managed, but can improve significantly. Using the techniques in this book, the individual with BPD has tangible, effective ways to help him/her live a more balanced life.

Highly recommend this book

I had to get off medications for bipolar disorder that weren't working. The meditations and mindfulness training in this book are so helpful in managing mood swings with limited medication. While not a substitute for medical management this book is an indispensable part of any program to manage bipolar disease or any other mental disorder. I found it to be life changing and recommend it to anyone suffering from the horrible pain of mental illness.

Carrie S. I. Jenkins is Professor of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and a nationally elected Canada Research Chair. I've been studying love for years and I've struggled to make sense of all the different, complex, and contradictory ways researchers approach the subject. Jenkins' book is remarkable in its ability to lead the reader through different disciplines in an intuitive and thoughtful way. I learned so much from this book--not just about the subject but also about how tackle a big, complicated topic in a sophisticated way.

Danny Katch is an activist and humorist often accused of not knowing the difference. He writes a regular column for Socialist Worker.org, where he is often known as Danny Lucia, the name of his former jailer in Siberia.

Socialism... Seriously... Is Seriously Good.

Are you tired of the same old dry and fact-filled 200 pager about why the system sucks and why socialism is the only solution? Danny Katch's "Socialism... Seriously: A Brief Guide to Human Liberation" is the antidote.

Don't get me wrong. I've read a number of great books making the case for socialism (Maass's "The Case for Socialism", Callinicos's "Revolutionary Ideas of Karl Marx" and stuff by Hal Draper) as the alternative to a system built off of profit expropriated from working people's labor. But Danny Katch's book really captures the humility and the seriousness of what its like to engage in the struggle to change the world.

Perhaps the most notable contribution he makes is his injection of humor. Humor is so much a part of the conversations about the failures of capitalism. I mean Jon Stewart rocked his criticism of society via humor for decades. When I chat with friends, you can't help but complain about inhumane work schedules, racist double standards, or the bizarre state of healthcare coverage in the US without injecting some humor to ease the pain but also highlight the absurd and hilarious contradictions that capitalism produces to continue to run. I mostly read the book on my subway commute to work and I could not help to laugh out loud. Every footnote was either super helpful or just plain hilarious. Or both.

Katch's book is an easy read. Its the book you want to share with people who are curious about socialism or aren't into texts filled with academic phrases and complex terminology. It gets to the point in such a fantastic way, with interesting analogies that you'll want to definitely take note of for the next political conversation you find yourself in. He deconstructs famous portions of Marx's writings, like the beginning of the Communist Manifesto, explains what he meant, and makes the case for its absolute relevance today. Check out Phil Gasper's annotated version of the Communist Manifesto if you decide you want more insight into the context behind what Marx was writing.

Katch spends the first half of the book deconstructing capitalism and also how politics work under capitalism. Super useful and invaluable stuff here.

The section of the book on Socialism begins with an account of a fictional day in the year 2051 after worker's have taken power and run society. This particular day is an account of a BAD day under socialism. But in imagining a bad day under socialism, Katch is able show the immense possibilities for what good days could be like. There's this misconception that socialism will be this society free of conflict, and in this account of a bad day under socialism, you get a glimpse of how the problems have shifted from how much freedom we have and the struggle to fight for liberation (like we struggle for now) but what to do with the freedom and democratic decision making dilemmas that arise when people are working together to solve and meet the world's needs instead of competing to make a profit at others expense. This exercise in thought alone is worth the price of the book.

The only criticism I have is that I wish there was some coverage of how anarchists fit into the picture. But its really a minor issue for me. This book is about making a convincing argument that this society isn't built for human need AND that the capacity to run it humanely, democratically, and in the interests of the majority of people is in fact completely possible and worth fighting for... but you have to organize and fight for it.

Buy the book. Read it and then give it to someone or encourage them to buy it. Danny Katch is a fantastic writer and he's written a book that could serve as the basis for getting people excited, organized, and confident about joining the life-long commitment to seeing worker's power in action.

The Perfect Intro to Revolution

I can't think of any other book about dismantling the horrors of capitalism that a) I read nonstop for three days and b) I laughed all the way through outside of Danny Katch's book. Mr. Katch outlines the tenets of Revolutionary Marxist politics, lays out the vision of a new world, and suitably obliterates capitalist exploitation in all its forms. If you think, "My, the world sure is being ravaged by capitalist destruction, racism, xenophobia, and greed," but don't know where to start, trust me: THIS IS IT. It's enough to make a Stalinist smile! (Not really, but it is fantastic.)

I'm a sensitive gal. I still cry when Dobby dies every time I read that book (You KNOW which one, and if you don't, I don't need you in my life). I start with this because Socialism...Seriously is just the kind of book that will explain what the eff is actually going on in this messed up world without making overly weepy people like me suicidal. Funny and full of hope, this book is a must for those questioning an economic system that puts profits over the lives of people.
