Off the Mark

This latest novel has all the elements of classic Singh tome, quirky characters, lurid sex and hints of the author's brilliant and distinctly Indian humor. But unfortunately Burial at Sea falls far short of the mark set by Singh's earlier work like Delhi and Train to Pakistan. Burial at Sea seems harried from the beginning and very scattered, lacking direction. The conclusion doesn't fair any better as the tale ends abruptly and unsatisfactorily. It seems like this novel was written in a rush, meant to either quickly satisfy a publisher's contract or to add a boost to the author's bank account. Unless you have a serious pension for Khushwant Singh and simply must read this new work, then I suggest that you don't.
