So misguided, so bitter. (YES, I actually read it, NO I don't have kids/a chip to bear)

Naturally I read the hype about this book before I read the book itself, but hey, I like a good chick lit and I thought the idea was kind of interesting, so why not try to read the book itself?

Well, here's why not.

In brief, it's poorly written. So much of it is lazy, and there are even errors in the text (could just be the kindle version I read, but was it rushed to press or something)?

Also, it's implausible. She's a 30-something woman in New York who's never found love - and yet there are no shortage of men picking her up at bars. Successful men who want a relationship with her. Riiiiiight.

Finally, the whole premise is just ridiculous. She writes from a place of such bitterness and naivete at the same time. She never actually challenges her idea that maternity leave isn't just for relaxing - she actually seems to believe that, to her core. She also believes that the mothers in her office get advantages that the single women don't, something that is naturally born out in her experience once she starts lying about being pregnant and planning her paid leave (which is a crime, btw, but of course she never suffers any repercussions). By the end of the book, of course her best friends are all happily in relationships and/or pregnant - because that's the only ending a woman can have, natch. Maybe... maybe she's just shallow?

As a gesture of how ridiculous the book is, what eventually saves her career/life is in large part an infrequently updated travel blog she writes to highlight her "passion" - despite rarely traveling. Her blog seems to consist of photos she takes off the internet coupled with top 10 lists of places she'd like to visit. Is this 2006???

Read it, Loved it. Great Summer book!

Unlike most of the "reviews" here, I just finished reading the book! Meternity is 90% light narrative of a FICTIONAL young professional. It's lightly written. It's fun. It's he perfect summer read.

What I didn't bargain for are the brilliant revelations at he end, the female bonding, which ironically is the opposite flow I am seeing from the reactions of the book summary.

It has been over 10 years since we initiated work on our first series of collaborative experiments. As graduate students, we had great fun planning, conducting, and writing this research (Petty & Cacioppo, 1977). We enjoyed arguing with each other at our initial meeting in 1973 and have sub� sequently become best friends, but neither of us suspected at the time that we would or could actively maintain a research collaboration over the next decade, or that we would now find ourselves in a position to write this monograph. As we note in Chapter 1, we began our studies of persuasion at a time when social psychology was in "crisis," and interest in research on attitude change in particular was declining. As we write this, we are aware of six new volumes on persuasion that are in press or in preparation and that should appear over the next few years. In retrospect, it is not so surprising that research on attitudes and persuasion would reemerge as a central concern of social psychology. We believe that human feelings, beliefs, and behaviors, whether in the domain of interpersonal relations (e. g. , marriage, aggression), politics (e. g. , voting, revolution), health (e. g. , following a medical regimen), or economics (e. g. , consumer purchases) are greatly influenced by the evaluations people have of other people, objects, and issues. Furthermore, evaluations (attitudes) are influenced by affect, cognition, and behavior.

About the Author
Arthur Waley was a distinguished authority on Chinese and Japanese language and literature. He translated many poems and novels from these languages. He was honoured many times for his work by the Chinese and received the Queen's medal for poetry in 1953. His work includes Chinese Poems, Japanese Poetry, The Tale of Genji and Monkey, the translation of a sixteenth-century Chinese novel, which was turned into a major BBC television series.

A Remarkable Book of Ancient Poetry

I devoured this book on a long-distance plane trip recently, and was amazed at the relevance of this collection of ancient, Chinese poems to modern life. Covering the time mostly between 900 B.C. and 1200 A.D., the themes these ancient poets deal with are the same most of us contemplate driving to work in the morning (if we turn off the radio), or lie with as we drift to sleep at night.
I found the poetry a little slow at first, but it gets more and more interesting the further one reads. I recommend it for the middle aged or older reader, or for anyone else who has time and inclination to seek the examined life. Food, romance, long-distance marriages and friendships, gender discrimination, the joys and frustrations of military service, the joys and frustrations of bureaucracy, fidelity, infidelity, births, and deaths, humor, sorrow -- it's all there, and speaks to us through the millenia.
A great collection at a bargain price!

A lot of humanity in these poems

The thing that impressed me most about these poems (that range in time from before the Han Dynasty up to China in the Middle Ages) is the humanity of the writers that is expressed so simply, sucinctly and eloquently. There are several poems by women which add a greater range of perspective to this collection.

Valuable insights about that which is grave and constant in the human experience. Emotions of lost love, unrequitted love and mourning are dealt with among other emotions.
