About the Author

Bruce Colbert is the Director of the Allied Health Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He holds a master’s in health education and administration, has authored nine books, has written several articles, and has given over 250 invited lectures and workshops at both the regional and national levels. Many of his workshops provide teacher training involving techniques to make the health sciences engaging and relevant to today’s students. In addition, he does workshops on developing effective critical and creative thinking, stress and time management, and study skills. He is an avid basketball player, even after three knee surgeries, which may indicate that he has some learning difficulties.

Jeff Ankney is the Director of Clinical Education for the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Respiratory Care program, where he is responsible for the development and evaluation of hospital clinical sites. In the past, Jeff has served as a public school teacher, Assistant Director of Cardiopulmonary Services, Program Coordinator of Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and a member of hospital utilization review, hospital policy, strategic planning and patient safety committees. He is a consultant on hospital management and pulmonary rehabilitation concerns. Jeff was also the recipient of the American Cancer Society Public Education Award. He is a pretty fair fly fisherman and wing shot, although his springer spaniel, Rusty, would probably disagree.

Karen Lee is an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, where she teaches all the anatomy courses, including anatomy and physiology for nursing and allied health students. She presents regularly at scientific conferences and has published several articles on crustacean physiology and behavior. An active member of the Council on Undergraduate Research, she is also the chair of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown’s annual undergraduate symposium. For the last 17 years she has sung bass in women’s barbershop choruses and quartets and more recently has been harmonizing with any singer or guitar player who will let her near the microphone.

conspiracy or psychosis?

Charlie Giles isn't sneaky. In fact, he's quite overt in his elimination of all obstacles in his path to the top of the high-tech world. He's ousted his business partner for using company money to fund his gambling habit, and he's fired his best quality engineer for leaking product security holes to the competition. Sounds like Mark Zuckerberg meets Julian Assange. As the flawed protagonist, Charlie isn't any more likeable than either of these two men. In fact, that would be my biggest complaint about the book is that I wasn't that concerned about Charlie's fate, but it's a thriller, after all, and character development is not the top priority. Since I'm a software developer myself, the subject matter also turned me off initially. I really prefer to read about a milieu that's not so mind-numbingly familiar, but this story is exotic in other ways. Charlie's brother, Joe, is a schizophrenic who struggles to maintain a semblance of normality. Their father, too, was schizophrenic, and now Charlie appears to be the victim either of a massive techno-conspiracy or the same mental health condition that plagues his brother, or, even more terrifying, a multiple-personality disorder. On some level, it reminded me of The Echo Maker by Richard Powers in which a man with a neurological disorder invents an elaborate conspiracy theory to explain his delusions. In this case, we assume that Charlie is ruthless but sane, and then doubt creeps in. The action is fast-paced, including a mental hospital breakout, a car submersion, and a wrong-way police chase. I may have guessed most aspects of the ending, but that just meant that I was racing to the end for confirmation.

Indefensible Checklist

Charlie Giles, rising star in the digital manufacturing world, catches wind of a conspiracy to scuttle his career. But when he tries to prevent it spreading, everything goes from bad to worse, and he finds himself fleeing his former employers. Is he the victim of corporate espionage? Is he the target of an elaborate gaslighting campaign? Or is he truly falling off his rocker?

Who cares? I mean that literally. I find it difficult to feel anything for Charlie or his story, because he makes the most stupid, arrogant, ill-considered choice at every juncture. And not only him: if any character could forgive honest mistakes in this book, they'll make a federal case. If they could talk out their differences, they'll throw punches. This book only makes sense if every character is indefensibly stupid.

Author Daniel Palmer holds his book hostage to the plot, never letting characters have an honest emotion or situations mature at a human pace. It feels like he read every book Joseph Finder and Iris Johannsen ever wrote, made himself a checklist, and wrote in a hurry. Shady stratagems? Check. Family member in distress? Check. Hero getting blamed for others' crimes? Check. And that's just in the first seventy pages.

It needn't be this way. Palmer, a former IT professional and part-time musician, creates persuasive, realistic insights into the IT industry and amateur jazz. If he cared as much about industrial politics, psychotherapy, corporate security, and other components of this story, he could write an intense, readable book. Instead, he fills these out with stereotypes memorized from movies and TV. It's a shame.

Charlie could avoid everything he endures if, on page 26, he asked, "Why should I trust someone I've known for an hour over the boss who has nurtured me for two years?" Or if, on page 38, his boss said, "Everyone has an off day. Just knock off early, we'll talk later." This lack of insight makes everything that follows seem inconsequential, and the book feel like a waste of time.

Great debut novel

I usually gravitate more towards the traditional murder mystery rather than a thriller, but I am certainly glad I gave this new author a chance. Daniel's writing was first rate. He ended his chapters with just enough suspense/teaser to get me to say "I'll read just one more chapter tonite."

Charlie Giles is ambitious times 10. It seems Charlie has walked over at least a few people to get to where he is today. His father walked out on them when he was young and his mother was too busy trying to cope with his older brother Joe's illness to pay Charlie any attention. Yet he excelled, both at MIT and in business. After a hiccup with his first business partner he was on his way to being a millionaire.

He can't stay in any relationship for longer than five minutes, but then he goes and gets a dog, so how bad can he be? Well, if he's killing everyone who has wronged him, then pretty bad. The story takes you around the beautiful Boston area and through the complete and utter downfall of Charlie Giles. I was guessing until the end and that's no easy task.

As an author I require a true Roget's, not a pathetic list of synonyms. Roget structured his work by concept rather than keying off the word itself. For instance, BREAK can be to destroy, but it can also be a crack in a levee, a broken contract, a time away from work, etc. Also has nouns, verbs and adjectives in each listing.

Where a typical Thesaurus returns a dozen alternatives, this volume returns hundreds. There are also many useful lists of things such as parts of a ship, types of ships, machinery, etc. Repeated sounds. Colors...at least 25 options for each color as well as their pigments.

I Was A Witness To His Mercy

My name is Donald Calloway, and I'm in the book. I'm in the book because I'm Father Calloway's adoptive father who just happens to share Father's first name, and not by accident either, I believe. Even though I've known Fr. Calloway since he was 8 years old, I can honestly tell you there are things in the book that were surprising even to me. Oh yes, his mother and I knew he was having trouble coping with a lot of things, things like our family's frequent moves and his changes in schools, given that Fr. Calloway is the son of a retired military officer; but, we really didn't have a sense of the depth of his waywardness. I can assure you all of the things you will read about in this book are factual. And, I should know because I lived it. As for my experience reading Father's book, I will tell you it was an absolute page-turner from beginning to end. I simply couldn't put it down. Father keeps the reader in suspense from chapter to chapter, wondering just what will happen next. From a spiritual perspective, Father Calloway's book is certainly going to save many souls for Jesus Christ. If you have a son or a daughter who is experimenting with many of the evils of this secular world we live in, or they're already caught up in these things and need help, this book can be your answer. You'll just have to read the book to understand the how and the why. I recommend that you buy a copy of Fr. Calloway's book and hide it under their pillow, or put it in their school backpack or in their car. You'll understand that too when you read the book. If this book teaches you nothing else, it should prove to you that no child is a throw-away child, that is, a child whose parents and society have given up on them, because there is always hope and there is always mercy, God's divine mercy. Father Calloway's life was transformed through the infinite mercy of his loving heavenly Father, through his Son and His immaculate mother, Mary, who is the Mediatrix of all graces. It is a sad fact that many of us rebel as teens, turning away from God in pursuit of one's identity. Whoever thinks any sinner is a lost cause, think again. This book exemplifies that there is no one outside the reach of God's infinite and divine mercy! I couldn't not put this book down; it was a page turner! Even though I was familiar with Fr. Don's story, I was riveted by the details of his past life and how with God's grace he escaped the darkness.

If you know of any parent or spouse in desperation for a loved one who's strayed or never had any faith at all, give them this book! This will be a source of hope for mothers like Fr. Don's to keep praying like St. Monica for St. Augustine!

About the Author
Professor Halgin received his Ph. D. from Fordham University, and completed a 3-year fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, prior to joining the faculty of the University of Massachusetts in 1977. He is a Board Certified Clinical Psychologist and has had over two decades of clinical, supervisory, and consulting experience. At the University of Massachusetts, his course in Abnormal Psychology is one of the most popular offerings on campus, attracting an enrollment of more than 500 students each semester. In recent years, he has also offered this course at Amherst College and Smith College. His teaching has been recognized at the university and national level. A University of Massachusetts Alumni Distinguished Professor, he was honored with the University's Distinguished Teaching Award and his teaching was recognized by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology of the American Psychological Association. In April 2003, his teaching was highlighted in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Professor Halgin is the author of more than fifty journal articles and book chapters in the fields of psychotherapy, clinical supervision, and professional issues in psychology.
