DANIEL PALMER is the author of four critically-acclaimed suspense novels, including "Delirious" and "Desperate". After receiving his master's degree from Boston University, he spent a decade as an e-commerce pioneer. A recording artist, accomplished blues harmonica player, and lifelong Red Sox fan, Daniel lives in New Hampshire with his wife and two children, where he is currently at work on his next novel.

conspiracy or psychosis?

Charlie Giles isn't sneaky. In fact, he's quite overt in his elimination of all obstacles in his path to the top of the high-tech world. He's ousted his business partner for using company money to fund his gambling habit, and he's fired his best quality engineer for leaking product security holes to the competition. Sounds like Mark Zuckerberg meets Julian Assange. As the flawed protagonist, Charlie isn't any more likeable than either of these two men. In fact, that would be my biggest complaint about the book is that I wasn't that concerned about Charlie's fate, but it's a thriller, after all, and character development is not the top priority. Since I'm a software developer myself, the subject matter also turned me off initially. I really prefer to read about a milieu that's not so mind-numbingly familiar, but this story is exotic in other ways. Charlie's brother, Joe, is a schizophrenic who struggles to maintain a semblance of normality. Their father, too, was schizophrenic, and now Charlie appears to be the victim either of a massive techno-conspiracy or the same mental health condition that plagues his brother, or, even more terrifying, a multiple-personality disorder. On some level, it reminded me of The Echo Maker by Richard Powers in which a man with a neurological disorder invents an elaborate conspiracy theory to explain his delusions. In this case, we assume that Charlie is ruthless but sane, and then doubt creeps in. The action is fast-paced, including a mental hospital breakout, a car submersion, and a wrong-way police chase. I may have guessed most aspects of the ending, but that just meant that I was racing to the end for confirmation.

Indefensible Checklist

Charlie Giles, rising star in the digital manufacturing world, catches wind of a conspiracy to scuttle his career. But when he tries to prevent it spreading, everything goes from bad to worse, and he finds himself fleeing his former employers. Is he the victim of corporate espionage? Is he the target of an elaborate gaslighting campaign? Or is he truly falling off his rocker?
Who cares? I mean that literally. I find it difficult to feel anything for Charlie or his story, because he makes the most stupid, arrogant, ill-considered choice at every juncture. And not only him: if any character could forgive honest mistakes in this book, they'll make a federal case. If they could talk out their differences, they'll throw punches. This book only makes sense if every character is indefensibly stupid.
Author Daniel Palmer holds his book hostage to the plot, never letting characters have an honest emotion or situations mature at a human pace. It feels like he read every book Joseph Finder and Iris Johannsen ever wrote, made himself a checklist, and wrote in a hurry. Shady stratagems? Check. Family member in distress? Check. Hero getting blamed for others' crimes? Check. And that's just in the first seventy pages.
It needn't be this way. Palmer, a former IT professional and part-time musician, creates persuasive, realistic insights into the IT industry and amateur jazz. If he cared as much about industrial politics, psychotherapy, corporate security, and other components of this story, he could write an intense, readable book. Instead, he fills these out with stereotypes memorized from movies and TV. It's a shame.
Charlie could avoid everything he endures if, on page 26, he asked, "Why should I trust someone I've known for an hour over the boss who has nurtured me for two years?" Or if, on page 38, his boss said, "Everyone has an off day. Just knock off early, we'll talk later." This lack of insight makes everything that follows seem inconsequential, and the book feel like a waste of time.

Great debut novel

I usually gravitate more towards the traditional murder mystery rather than a thriller, but I am certainly glad I gave this new author a chance. Daniel's writing was first rate. He ended his chapters with just enough suspense/teaser to get me to say "I'll read just one more chapter tonite."
Charlie Giles is ambitious times 10. It seems Charlie has walked over at least a few people to get to where he is today. His father walked out on them when he was young and his mother was too busy trying to cope with his older brother Joe's illness to pay Charlie any attention. Yet he excelled, both at MIT and in business. After a hiccup with his first business partner he was on his way to being a millionaire.
He can't stay in any relationship for longer than five minutes, but then he goes and gets a dog, so how bad can he be? Well, if he's killing everyone who has wronged him, then pretty bad. The story takes you around the beautiful Boston area and through the complete and utter downfall of Charlie Giles. I was guessing until the end and that's no easy task.
