The author of the sex guide She Comes First and the "dating doctor" for Lifetime TV, Kerner takes up the cause of "Sex and the City" women everywhere, urging ladies to dump the "in-the-meantime" men and raise their standards on the husband hunt. Kerner's book will appeal to the chick lit audience, with his sassy quizzes and blunt language, as when he writes that women settle on a mediocre boyfriend because "they like having their egos and (and lower parts) stroked." How unfortunate, then, that Kern's logic is often so sloppy. Can it really always be true, as he writes, that being married "is harder than being single, even in the best of circumstances" or that "If women were really disposed to have sex like men, they'd be greater consumers of porn and prostitution"? The book equivocates in trying to promote sexual freedom while encouraging emotional responsibility, and all the laugh lines don't quite hide the fact that the entire book's wisdom is essentially contained in the subtitle. A final chapter, written jointly by Kerner and his wife, does stand out for its personality and wit. Here's hoping they team up for a whole book next time. Meanwhile, this one's sure to do brisk business among singletons.

I bought this book for my girlfriend who struggles with the wrong men. As her bestie I try to give advise as to what I see wrong with each guy's behavior and why they run. This little book will help her see the pattern early and realize he's really not for her either!

Wake up and smell your SELF EMPOWERMENT

This book kicks "He's not that into You" firmly in the crotch. Thank the Good Lord that someone finally did.

The first chapters explain why it's a bad idea for women to have casual sex. DUH!!! For me and my friends, this is as true as the sky is blue. Having sex like a man is a myth. I cannot fathom why people are watching "Sex and the City" and believing it. Ian Kerner, the author, explains in scientific terms why it's not likely for women to have sex that is casual as well as enjoyable. He goes into hormones, the way other mammals act, etc. This book suggests that having "sex like a man" is UN-empowering, despite what your local commando feminist might say.

Note to the audience: For those readers who are squeamish about sex and masturbation, the first couple of chapters are going to be uncomfortable. If you're not having sex, this book is probably not useful for you. Also, if you have problems finding a guy, this book is not for you. However, if you find that you are dating guys that you're not that into, this book is for you. Also, if you're a parent and your daughter is going away to college, I'd recommend this book for your daughter. It might keep her away from the frat houses. Believe me, it happens, and it's better for her to get a good whiff of reality before she is out on her own.

The second and third couple of chapters explain why you should not seriously date someone who you're not that into. I don't think that these chapters are as good as the first, but I identify with dating people who I am not that into. It's a waste of time. You know from the very beginning that you're not going to marry them, and spending time by yourself is so much more enjoyable and empowering.

Overall, I think that this book is a four star book, but I am giving it five simply because it kicks some butt.

A Must-Read for Single Women...

I picked up this book yesterday and couldn't put it down. I just wish it had come out sooner -- like when I started my downward spirial of dating guys that I wasn't that into when I graduated from college.

The book is easy-to-read and funny. Forget "The Rules." This book provides useful, non-preachy advice. For some funny reason, I felt like Dr. Kerner was cheering me on from the sidelines. Definitely worth buying. Don't judge this one by the picture on its cover....

An excellent ending to a very good series

An excellent ending to a very good series. Not Weis and Hickman's best necessarily(that will always be Death Gate for me) but it kept me reading until the end. It does feel a little rushed sometime, probably because this was supposed to be a 6 book series, but it all does seem to fit into place by the end. The main character's story arc comes full circle as he learns what it takes to be a good man, and leader of people. I loved the series mythology feel, and it's gods knowledge that they haven't done a great job, after introducing them as strong, and very capable to the world's inhabitants, seems to really make the story more than just a fate will figure it out plot that it seemed to be going to earlier in the series. I also loved that it turns out the gods the book introduces as the repulsive ogre's gods, turn out to be the more capable. It can be argued that the different races, long enemies, came together a little too easy in the end, but makes sense with the gods direct involvement with the people of the world. Another very good series by the veteran duo!

Compared to the other books, I think this final book stumbles. Overall, I enjoyed the book- It kept in lien with the other books, and it was a pretty good ending to the series. It keep me reading until the end, but I was somewhat disillusioned by the ending. I can't explain why, but I felt this book kind of dragged on and was just unsettling. It seemed like the book was written just to close out the story. Along the lines of 'I'll try my best, but I want this to end..'

About the Author
Dr. Ian Pepper is currently a Professor at the University of Arizona. He is also Director of the University of Arizona, Environmental Research Laboratory (ERL) and the NSF Water and Environmental Technology (WET) Center. Dr. Pepper is an environmental microbiologist specializing in the molecular ecology of the environment. His research has focused on the fate and transport of pathogens in air, water, soils and wastes. His expertise has been recognized by membership on six National Academy of Science Committees and former memberships on an EPA FIFRA Science and Advisory Panel. Dr. Pepper is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Academy of Microbiology, the Soil Science Society of America, and the American Society of Agronomy. He is also a Board Certified Environmental Scientist within the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists. He is the author or co-author of six textbooks; 40 book chapters; and over 180 peer-review journal articles.

Dr. Charles P. Gerba is a Professor at the University of Arizona. He conducts research the transmission of pathogens through the environment. His recent research encompasses the transmission of pathogens by water, food and fomites; fate of pathogens in land applied wastes; development of new disinfectants; domestic microbiology and microbial risk assessment. He has been an author on more than 500 articles including several books in environmental microbiology and pollution science. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1998 he received the A. P. Black Award from the American Water Works Association for outstanding contributions to water science and in 1996 he received the McKee medal from the Water Environment Federation for outstanding contributions to groundwater protection. He received the 1999 Award of Excellence in Environmental Health from National Association of County and City Health Officials.

Annoying

I don't know, maybe I would have liked this better if I'd read it at the same time as A Beginner's Guide to Rakes, but as it is, I've kind of forgotten what happened in that, since it's been a few months and a couple hundred books since then. As it is, it's a short story that's not particularly interesting, and if viewed on its own, doesn't have a satisfying ending, either.

If anything, though, this story makes me like Oliver less, so I don't think I would have liked it all that much even if I'd read it earlier. I don't know, I just don't like heroes who have sex with the heroine, then jump out the window and continue in their rakish ways because they're afraid of falling in love. If it happened in the past, and not in the actual book, then I have less of a problem with it. But this story essentially puts it on screen and makes it part of the book, which does not endear the hero to me, it just makes him seem like a creep. (Is it too much to ask for heroes to be celibate after having sex with the heroine?)

And the sex wasn't even all that sexy. Or maybe it was just this line, but then I started giggling and couldn't stop: "As she bounced up and down on him enthusiastically..."

disappointing

I like the author's previous books in the Tantalus Club series. (The first three, which are all that have been published before this one.)

This one is a prequel novella/short story to A Beginner's Guide to Rakes. A problem is that the hero seems like a different person in this book. He's weak and uninteresting. I know, he's supposedly grown up between the two books, but the difference is almost complete.

Plus, it's just not that interesting as a stand alone piece of writing. It almost seems like it was supposed to be the beginning of A Beginner's Guide to Rakes, was left out for length considerations, and now is being published as a 99 cent story.

I would save your money. There's no benefit to reading this book.

That said, I do like a lot of Enoch's other books, although not all of them. I look forward to the fifth in this series which is apparently due out in a few months.

Old stories written by dead authors, new stories written by authors still alive, can be just as good to read today as they were when written. Reading about Regency England is my favorite time period to enjoy. I picked this story because the author's style of storytelling matches my reading interest level. A sexually involved story to make the mind think.

This book took me back in time where Latin was the language of choice and where people read aloud rather than silently. The written word was read aloud as a conduit to a spiritual connection to God.

Terrific romp

As with most Illich books, the footnotes are right there where you need them, are fascinating in their own right -- and can be skipped if you're in a hurry. Though why one would be in a hurry to finish such an entertaining look at the history of reading in the pivotal 12th century, I'm not sure. (I thought about trying to read the book out loud, but wasn't sure I could manage the plainchant.)
