A Good Introduction to Photography for Beginners

Blake's first e-book on high dynamic range photography, to a large extent, mirrored the content that he posts on his everydayhdr.com website. In this second e-book, he takes a step back from the post-processing side of image capture and (instead) talks through the more elementary nuts and bolts of photography--composition, exposure, how a camera works, how to deal with lighting. For those people that are just starting out with their first dSLR and who might be intimidated by either the owner's manual that came with the camera or the complexity of the camera itself, this book can a useful way to de-mystify their camera and to talk about somewhat complicated concepts--such as metering--in plain, accessible English with several real life examples to illustrate the concept. It's not so much a replacement for the owner's manual (since Blake points out that the owner's manual is important since it's specific to a camera) as it is a supplement to it.

Some minor quibbles: I read the book on a 7 inch Google Nexus tablet, and because of the smaller screen size (compared to a computer monitor, for example), some of the photographic examples were too small to be of much use, particularly when it comes to dealing with focusing or noise. On a seven inch tablet, the amount of noise on an images taken with a low ISO setting, for example, looks about the same as the amount of noise at a high ISO setting. An example at 100% crop might help in this instance. Reading the book on a larger screen would also help.

Finally, the section on post-processing is helpful insofar as it gets beginners starting to think about how to treat their out-of-camera images as a starting point rather than an end result. However, it is (by necessity) quite brief and, for those readers that are simply starting to figure out their camera, it introduces concepts without providing the simple step-by-step instructions that readers at an introductory level would require in order to put these concepts to practical use.

Again, in closing, I want to emphasize that these criticisms are minor. For the most part, this book can be a very valuable resource to new dSLR photographers.

√ Post-Processing Software is Absolutely Essential!

This is a thorough introduction to using your digital SLR camera. There are tons of useful tips, like the one in the title above. I had no idea that one should be using post-processing software. The author gives an entire chapter to it (Chapter 11), and says, "I will not even show my wife my pictures until I have taken them to the next level with my post processing software."

The author speaks from experience, and gives a ton of useful ideas. Let his experience save you a lot of trouble. Are you an expert on perspective? How 'bout how to properly do "Framing?" Do you know what the "Composition Triangle" is? If not, get this book and get started!

♦ Good illustrations, such as the "Use the rule of Thirds" artwork.
♦ Good discussion of the "Exposure Triangle" of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.

Yes! There is a surprising bonus--"Building a Personal Survival Kit." The author calls this your "very cheap, one-time purchase insurance policy." Some really good ideas for what to store.

A very sexy week of training

Schooled to Obey is a delectable little tale about submission and, specifically, training for submission. It is fairly short, a novella in a series, and moves along at sex-novella speed. Which is: pretty fast!

This is the story of Lily, a young governess for a wealthy woman who has worked her way up from poverty to a respected, educated position. We meet her in the carriage on her way to meet her trainer, with her mistress Lady Montgomery and a fellow employee along. She is in literal heat, having been given a drug that increases blood flow to her most private ladyparts (for reasons explained later). She is in desperate need of relief, from what she does not yet know.

How she finds herself in this situation might bother some readers, but to me it makes Lily’s consent to be trained for a new type of service all the hotter: the children in Lily’s charge are old enough to attend boarding school, and Lily’s poor mother, who sacrificed so much to get her the education needed for a better job, is ill. Lily will face a diminished income, unable to provide for her mother’s care, unless – oh yes, unless – she accepts the offer from her mistress to trade a far more…personal…type of service, for the relocation of her mother to the estate’s grounds and a nurse to care for her.

Lily agrees, and not to worry – to say that she enjoys her days of training, despite herself, is an understatement. Lily has been brought to a male trainer of sexual servants, even though she is to be trained for “Sapphic Love,” as they called it then, because the very masculine Lord Harcourt is simply the best that there is at his particular skill. He commences to put Lily through the wringer, and what a wonderful wringer it is.

There is a LOT of sex in Schooled to Obey, and the scenes are very hot indeed. There is much plundering of orifices, in a good way. Ms. Ansevi is a talented writer, and she makes even the small scenes hot. Even in scenes which are familiar to those of us who’ve read a fair amount of BDSM erotica – such as Lily having to walk naked to the dining room for dinner for the first time, right in front of all the servants – we can feel Lily’s embarrassment and the newness of it all to her. Ms. Ansevi makes it feel vitally sexy.

My only quibble is that the story could use more *setting.* I know that this is an erotic novella, and as such the decision was made to emphasize action (and the action is excellent!) over setting and sensory detail, beyond the senses of the sex acts. I did sometimes feel like the characters were acting upon an empty stage – I knew little of what the bed chamber was like beyond it having a bed; I know nothing of what the mansion looked, sounded, or smelled like. And these things could have added another layer to Lily’s new experiences – a slower, more sensual description of her being ordered to navigate a garden maze, naked and blindfolded, could have been mind-blowing. Nor am I sure exactly *when* this story takes place – 1880’s England was different than 1830’s, or the 1780’s; that difference in tenor could have added a bit of depth, as well.

I don't know how much all of that matters to other readers; as I said, the sex IS fantastic. This novella was intended as a sexy romp, and in that, it truly, truly succeeds. I look forward to Book 2, in which Lily is returned to her mistress, trained, eager, and having learned MANY new things about herself. Or will that be in Book 3? I am anxious to find out. This book, however, was pure fun.

Well Written and Hot

To avoid repeating the blurb or giving away too much of the story, I’ll just say if you like BDSM erotica, this novella is hot. It’s also well written.
The characters all rang true, from Lily the ex-governess, to Lady Montgomery, to Lord Harcourt. Well, of course some of it seemed a little too over-the-top to really be true but after all, it is erotica.

In some places, Lily’s language didn’t seem to me like the sexual terms she would actually use, but then I’m not sure what someone from her place and time actually would say. Also, some readers might not like how she didn’t seem to have much choice in accepting this deal in the first place. Her mother was extremely ill and needed resources beyond what Lily had. Of course, this is fiction so that’s just a heads-up for those who would disapprove anyway.

I don’t think the cover matches the story. It’s too modern and the man looks too young and small to be Lord Harcourt.

The problems were very minor, though, and in my opinion not worth taking off a star over. I highly recommend this story for anyone who likes this type of read.

Tony was an A**HOLE!!! He treated Trish like crap!! Talked to her so horribly. Now I don't know about you, but I wouldn't have stayed for that s***!!! But SHE did!!!!! She basically let him continue to do it allllll the way to the end of the book!!! I know she felt guilty for hurting him over the fake cheating pictures from Lexi's story, but my god she had no back bone. None. Except of course when she tried to beat the hell outta Destiny :D Now, I did LOVE that scene!!! But there were soooo many times when I wanted her to pack up her stuff and leave already! Between his manwhoring, the Girlfriend BJ (lol) from the beginning, , him calling her a whore at the beginning of the story, I mean I could go on and on with the awful things he did and said to her. I felt so bad for her! When she asked him if he loved her and he said he "cared", she held herself with some pride and dignity I guess and said she understood! But I wanted to scream "LEAVE NOW YOU DUMMY! WHERE IS YOUR PRIDE!?" because the poor girl apologized and explained over and over!!!

I cried When Trish got kidnapped and Lex went to Tony's house and told him about what happened to Trish when she was 9 yrs old and that she had been a virgin until him. And I'm glad it gutted him. He deserved it!!! I'm glad he was so distraught over her that he threw up. It was hard for me to feel sorry for him. I disliked him that much and by the time he got his head outta his ass it was too late for me to like him. I can handle all the jealousy, the bossy alpha male stuff about him, but he broke her so many times I just couldn't forgive him. And for me, he didn't grovel or suffer enough for her to have forgiven him finally. I do love Trish's character, I felt for her and felt connected to her which is probably why I'm so pissed at Tony for her. The last 21-22 % of this book is so emotional. I got teary eyed through so much of the last part of it. Very well written.

I have to add that I was thrilled that Lexi and Lan were in the story. Loved that!

I LOVED Lexi, Baby!!!!!! I LOVE Lynda LeeAnne's writing!!!!! I LOVE ALL the characters from this series, except for Tony lol and I WILL read and can not wait to read Adam's book!

*********I re-read the last 20% of the book tonight, (I read this book in one setting earlier today) and after reading, I may not be as mad at Tony anymore. Because even tho he can still be a HUGE a**hole, I know he loves Trish. He just better treat her like the damn fine woman she is lol from now on. ;) and ok, maybe now that I'm not so mad, he did suffer a lot, and I'll admit he showed her a lot of remorse and love and I'm glad for HER lol she loved him and he did come through for her in the end. I hope I sound nicer now lol *************

Yea, that is my happy dance because this book was FAN-TABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!

Lord have mercy the tension between Tony and Trish had me fanning myself. Have mercy those two had me going all kinds of crazy. My inner minion was telling me, yea you are a little crazy, but its okay because everyone is, right?

I am sure if you read this you are gonna be all kinds of crazy too. It's a emotional rollercoaster. I mean at one time I was hot, in need of a cold shower,then I was in need of some ice cream to heal my broken heart.

I mean I was beginning to love and HATE Tony at the same time, then he done things that made me really hate him and I wanted Trish to not be so pathetic and leave his sorry a**.

Trish was my hero, she was so brave and hard core but Tony could tear her down and I hated to see her so broken, without any fight left in her lil feisty body and after finding out what happened to her at the age of 9 , and the hurtful awful things that Tony spat from his vile mouth, well then I wanted to hug Trish and ball like a baby!

Yea so I was happy, I cried, I screamed, I did a happy dance, I wanted to climb through this iPad and kick Tony in the ball sack and watch him squirm!!

But there were times that good ol Trish brought out that fighting spirit that had me rooting her on, especially when she told BJ( hahaha) just how Tony liked it, I busting up. I laughed so hard I had happy tears.

And when Destiny showed up, the claws were out and Trish was about to rip her apart if Tony had not intervened and that had me, jumping up and down, rooting her own!

I can only say this book was AWESOME!!!!!!

Lynda LeAnne is pure genius.

Tony has no redeeming qualities

This is just my opinion and you may feel I'm totally off base which is perfectly okay. I absolutely could not stand either character. Trish was weak. Really, really weak. NEVER would I let a man talk to me and treat me the way she let Tony treat her. Tony was a total Neanderthal. I cannot stress enough how disgusting I found Tony. He was emotionally abusive and she just took it and told him she loved him. We didn't even get a back story on Tony that may have given us insight as to why he was borderline psychotic and possessive. Possibly even have made it all somewhat justifiable. Ugh...had to force myself to finish this one.

The supporting characters were decent. I would like to see more from Shane and Shannon but hope Tony and Trish disappear.

I'm giving this book 1.5 stars because I had enjoyed Lexi Baby and wouldn't mind seeing Shane and Shannon get their story told as mentioned above. I also feel obligated to mention this book was riddled with editing issues. That normally isn't something that bothers me to much but when your already not enjoying the book they seem to jump out at you more!

Great contemporary review of some of the oldest techniques

If you are like me and you love to have a physical book on hand for inspiration and reference, this book is fantastic. It's hard to find a resource that has both contemporary references in action, and the process that make them happen. While the book does a good job explaining block printing, letterpress, block or relief printing, and other methods, it is not a "How To" guide, Williamson does have whole books written on the subjects ("The Little Book of Screen Printing", "The Little Book of Letterpress") that I'm sure will give a more thorough step by step guide (though I have not read them).

"Low Tech Print" gives the names of artists and practitioners in the field and beautiful examples of the work they are producing. I find it incredibly inspiring, as it is essentially a crap shoot ordering books on these techniques off amazon, and most of the books you find in brick and mortar stores are grossly out of date or as stale as a text book.

The layout, binding of the book and embossing of the cover/jacket (of the paperback) are just the kind of fetishistic object anyone into print can appreciate. I've been combing the pages offline and compiling my twitter and bookmark list online with the great companies and artists featured here.

This book is totally worth it.

INDISPENSABLE / MUST-HAVE

When it comes to the current landscape of stellar printed art no one curates a book like Caspar Williamson: his Little Book Of Screen Printing remains one of my most loved collections of eye-popping printed art and graphics. Low Tech Print takes things even further by covering some incredible screen printing and also adding equally fantastic chapters on letterpress, relief printing, and 'other printing methods' .. all of which will have your mind racing with pleasure and inspiration if you're a fan and / or practitioner of handmade goodness. A fine balance of images and text and worth it 10x over as an addition to your collection. PS- this book turned me on to Chicha Posters from Peru and my mind has been blown ever since.

Full disclosure: I purchased this because my work was in it. That being said, I purchase a handful of books for that reason, but this one was actually a book I would have wanted regardless. The work chosen was all top notch and everything was laid out beautifully.

Contains discussion and practice and references elsewhere for details

This is meant to be a practical book. The author's "objective is to provide a thorough discussion of the most useful data-mining tools that goes beyond the typical 'black box' description, and to show why these tools work". I think the result of reading and doing the exercises in this book is:

1. I will have acquired some familiarity with regression techniques and a few of the problems they can help with
2. I will have performed the regression techniques in R

Over half the text focuses on various kinds of regression. Then there is a little bit on classification, decision trees, clustering, principal components analysis.

However, I also think:

1. The math is so fast --- mostly one definition after another --- that its inclusion is superfluous. If you know what the equations are, there is no need to see them here. If you don't, this presentation isn't a good way to learn them. These sections often say to check out the author's 2006 text Introduction to Regression Modeling for more details.

2. The mentions of alternate software (Minitab, SAS, SPSS) are useless throwaways and should either be removed or expanded. Who cares if I have two brands of calculators that give me the same answer for 3 + 4? Likewise, there is no need to say that R gives the same answer as Minitab in a single example (pp. 88-92) or that some feature exists in SAS and SPSS (CHAID, p. 186).

3. The exercises are extremely important for practicing.

4. Examples sometimes have long program output. In my experience, it takes some practice to read the program output and understand what each number means, and this discussion is not really done in the text.

From a statistics perspective, I would instead recommend Tibshirani, Hastie, Friedman: The Elements of Statistical Learning. For machine learning techniques, Segaran: Programming Collective Intelligence.

Review for Data Mining and Business Analytics with R

This is an excellent book which is very accessible to readers in several fields. It gives a very good summary of different statistical techniques which are used for data mining. It also gives some good large data sets and show how the tools can be implemented. It begins with a chapter on summarizing the data to have an initial feel about the data. Then it gives discussion on regression (linear, polynomial, nonparametric). Then the book goes into techniques such as LASSO, logistic regression, classification, nearest neighbour analysis, decision trees, clustering, dimension reduction with principle components and partial least squares etc. These are all illustrated by examples with the help of the software R which is freely available on the internet. The book also presents, binary classification and multinomial logistic regression. It has a chapter on text mining as well. The last chapter discusses two examples of network data.
The book is well written with an applied audience in mind and hence details are avoided to focus on the techniques which are explained well. The examples are well chosen and illustrates the techniques very well. The data sets and the R code for all examples are on a webpage accompanying the book. Exercises and several large practice data sets are given at the end of the book. These are good resources for applying the techniques and getting practice.
Overall the book is very good for practitioners in diverse fields such as business, marketing, social sciences, and engineering.
It can also be used as a text in Management programmes, Applied Statistics etc. I recommend it highly.

Learning by example (if you already know basic R)

While this book is expensive, if you know some R already and you are looking for more examples for covering statistical learning/modeling methods, with sample code, this is an excellent buy. If you don't know R you will need to spend a bunch of time getting up to speed before you hit this book.

Even though it is targeted at the business world the examples and code are widely applicable. From the table of contents and index you can get a feel for the topics covered. If you want to see the actual code used check the books website. It is solid and includes the code, the data sets and an errata. If you are curious to know what R libraries are touched, they include: arules, car, class, cluster, elipse, igraph, lars, lattice, leaps, locfit, MASS, mixOmics, mixtools, nutsheell, ROCR, startnet, textir, tree and VGAM.

This is a pretty book with great well annotated graphics to help you learn. The writing is pleasantly clear and direct without being too terse. While the code could be better commented (for the R novices) in general it is good and the text which surrounds the code is very good.

There are formulas here. The math complements the writing rather than being a deep dive.

The references to outside work are on target but the author does not include some obvious choices like An Introduction to Statistical Learning: with Applications in R (Springer Texts in Statistics) for a deeper look at the math or Data Analysis and Graphics Using R: An Example-Based Approach (Cambridge Series in Statistical and Probabilistic Mathematics) for additional examples.

Overall, this is an excellent book for someone who knows basic statistics and the fundamentals of R and who wants to learn modern methods using examples.
