More Doctors should read this book.

Alcoholism is one of the most debated and misunderstood diseases in the world. Most people think that alcoholics drink to soothe inherent psychological problems such as depression and anxiety. This book asserts the opposite, anxiety and depression are often times symptoms of alcoholic withdrawal and they only get worse as the disease progresses. I really appreciated how this author clearly explained, in a scientific way, how alcohol affects the alcoholic differently than the non-alcoholic and stresses how this disease is not a character flaw or moral weakness of the alcoholic's. This means that an alcoholic can receive all the therapy and counselling in the world but if the drinking continues the condition will worsen, because the drinking is causing the condition.

And I also really appreciated the section on tranquilizers and sedatives and the potential devastating effects they can have on an individual if combined with alcohol. I know that to be true on a very personal level. However, even now, thirty years after this book was published, most general family practitioners seem completely ignorant on alcoholism. I've been to see doctors, complaining of insomnia and anxiety, and they seemed very unconcerned with my alcohol intake and were eager to write me a prescription for a sedative and send me on my way. Then I went to see a psychiatrist and told him about my overwhelming anxiety and said I was drinking heavily to cope. He told me to "try to cut down on the drinking", then gave me some very powerful benzos to take "as needed". After reading this book I now realize how incredibly negligent these doctors were!

If you are an alcoholic, the one most important thing to take away from this book is that booze isn't helping you cope, it is in fact making it more and more impossible to cope. Your only chance for freedom is abstinence. This book provides a good, solid plan for recognizing your problem, understanding your condition and getting help. I highly recommend it. Of course, most people who are in the later stages of alcoholism usually are not capable of reading books so I would also recommend this to anyone close to someone in that situation as a means to understand what they are going through and what you can do to help.

A staple if you love an alcoholic

Sometimes a little difficult to get through all of the medical terms (& I had 6 semesters of Anatomy & Physiology as well as Pathology) but overall this book is priceless for those who are dealing with alcoholism in there life or loved one's. It breaks down the disease by stages & explains, sometimes painfully well, what is going on inside the alcoholic's body through each stage, as well as how this manifests in outward signs & symptoms. It's terrifying to know the truth, but empowering as well. I would recommend this book to everyone who has ever or is dealing with alcoholism in some way in their life.

This book saved my life over 29 years ago when I was drinking. The physiological aspects to my alcoholism was a surprise to me and took me out of my depression to begin the life long journey of recovery and sobriety. I give this book to people trying to stop drinking.

A clearly written book on a contentious topic - what ...

A clearly written book on a contentious topic - what should we do about protecting/nurturing ecosystems and how do we decide? Nothing has changed in the 10 years since this book was published- it is as relevant today as it was then. Norton puts various views under the microscope and shows how many are based on 'either/or' philosophies, thereby eliminating opportunities for trying different approaches and learning from them. A solution? Simply put, to work together trying solutions to problems and in so doing, to learn what actions to try (or not) next, and also to develop shared values and ways of communicating about the issues. As a practising 'pragmatic' conservationist struggling with the same questions, I wish I had discovered this book earlier! It links together (and provides an academically grounded, philosophical history) of various approaches from risk assessment to decision theory - in plain English. Don't be put off by the length- you can get the main points without having to read the more in- depth material.

could be more succinct but a great set of ideas and proposals

The main idea of this book is excellent. Norton claims we need to begin to allow experience to shape the way we live with our environment and set aside pre experiential ideology. In addition he rejects the current idea in the EPA that it is possible to separate fact from values. An alternative approach would involve a public dialogue where a plurality of values can be expressed. This is a giant leap over the current technocratic approach that tends to reduce all things to economic value. As well, we need to be thinking on different levels of space and time to make sure short term goals don't destroy future opportunities. When these conditions are in place we can begin to have a democratic process.

You will not see a global perspective as this is written by someone with a history and focus on the EPA. Nor will you see a critical discussion of a power elite or of underlying structural issues. Norton threatens a much longer book to tackle these issues. I am okay with his decision but some readers will not approve.

The above ideas are fully developed to the point that it sometimes hurts. Yes, that is better than shooting from the hip but there are several ways this book could be reorganized and condensed without sacrificing completeness, connectedness, and comprehensiveness. If you can accept this minor issue you will enjoy and benefit from this book.

A Progressive, Action-Oriented View of Sustainability

By far one of the best books I have read on sustainability. This is a lengthy book and Norton can definitely be both wordy and well over my head at times, but the message is solid. Adaptive Management offers a complement to progressive viewpoints by firmly rejecting economic reductionism, while promoting an action-oriented process that doesn't allow individuals to hide behind uncertainty to avoid making tough decisions. If you are an individual who believes that environmental problems do exist, and don't want to get mired down in the polarized arguments of environment versus economics, give this book a read. Some key topics discussed in this book are:

* Linkages between science and social values
* Pragmatism and a "middle-way"
* Darwinism and evolution
* Adaptive management & social learning
* Pluralism
* Creating a new vocabulary for sustainability & environmental issues

Norton argues that our "current language is inadequate because it leads to polarization over environmental values and to ideological environmentalism." Instead Norton proposes adpative management and uses the length of the book to discuss the context and concepts that surround the implementation of such a concept. What strikes me about adaptive management is that it is geared to handle both uncertainty and learning (constant evolution), two features which logically seem crucial to dealing with todays issues. It will take me a long time to fully digest the amount of information in this book, but it was well worth the read and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of what "sustainability" is--or more importantly, could be.

Joseph H. Peterson has translated many esoteric and religious source works including The Clavis or Key to the Magic of Solomon, Arbatel, and John Dee's Five Books of Mystery. Scholarly Rendering of the Sworn Book of Honorius

This is an amazing root level resource for many grimoires we are more familiar with, and yet, it's totally unlike anything in the Solomon cycle of works.

At its heart is a magic based on Christian piety. The work centers around an lengthy operation to initiation, similar to Abraham's Book of Sacred Magic. But in comparison of those two works, this is the completely opposite approach. Abraham advises you to write your own prayers, Honorius gives it to you word for word. While Abraham sets you in a process of self-reflection, Honorius assaults the ego with endless prayers, orations, and barbarous names. Ritual and cosmology are stressed in the Honorius System with a complexity that Abraham would have had little patience for. Honorius is much more focused on planetary magic, and working with elementals.

For the Enochian magician, this is a great chance to look at a document that was formative to Dee's system, including the information and variations on the Great Seal of God. Angel magicians looking to expand their lists will find angel names here that are not found elsewhere. Magic historians will be delighted with the synthetic fusion of Merkava mysticism with Catholic ritual, and Byzantine Christianity in general. This early fusion of ideas planted fertile seeds in the Western magic current that can be seen reflected in hundreds of manuscripts in libraries throughout Europe. Ritualists will find the magic whistle completely unique to modern grimoire work, as well as the use of concave circles or "pits" to evoke evil spirits, and an interesting take on planetary calling directions with basically a seven pointed compass.

The reason much of this material was lost to the mainstream magic circles of the time, is that to obtain the book you first had to give an oath that your copy would be destroyed upon your death. It's a wonder this work wasn't lost to us entirely.

As usual Joseph Peterson does a great job footnoting and explaining the context of phrases and customs unfamiliar to the modern reader. His insight into the mediaeval mind is a valuable resource and he is generous in sharing it. Having said that, there is less footnoting here, than you may have come to expect if you have other works by Peterson. The Latin of the work appears on the left and the translation on the right.

The original author was very erudite and familiar, or at least exposed to a variety of mystical and spiritual traditions. Peterson's treatment of the text is scholarly, but the author of the original work was equally so. While the endless prayers, orations, masses, and the like are likely to weary the modern reader, beyond that is a brilliant synthesis of spirito-magical art.

fun easy to understand rules

The rules in this book are easy to understand, and I love that it was available for instant download. We were travelling and playing cards in our hotel rooms at night, and it was great to be able to refer to this to solve small family feuds while playing.

Blackjack Rules Incomplete

Blackjack - dealer must take hit card at least until reaching 17. The book doesn't mention this.

It's important because if a player stands on 13 and the dealer flip the hole card showing a 15 it woud seem that the dealer won. But even though the dealer has the better hand they MUST continue to take hit-cards until they at least reach 17. In the process the dealer may bust . . . . in which case the player would win.

Also, I was a little surprised the book didn't included rules for Texas Hold 'Em Poker as it is very popular.

Good variety but most are in depth to learn

I like the variety of games this book offers but it was frustrating that many of the games had in depth rules and were a little difficult to learn or pick up quickly. It's good if you have the time and patience to thoroughly read through before actually sitting down to play but in the heat of the "which game should we play" moment, it's not my favorite.

Setting an optimal price where company profits are maximized is one of the most difficult decisions to make when starting a biz.

I liked this book a lot. I thought it was well outlined and well written. The book's overall message is that the small business owner should link prices to the value delivered. The reader should be able to optimize pricing for her services or products after considering the 10 rules of pricing presented in this book:

1. Generally, don't let the customer talk you down in price
2. Price your service or product at a level that a customer is willing to pay if they understand the value of your service or product
3. Know which of three pricing strategies you are using and stick to it
4. It's OK to negotiate price with customers, but make sure you win
5. It's OK to lower prices, but only in order to increase profits
6. Expand your offerings so you aren't locked into one price for one product
7. Great pricing will often force your competition to react to your pricing
8. Your company's sales force has to be expert at why and how you priced your services or products
9. Set prices based on value - not on cost-plus
10. Always keep in mind you are in business to make a profit without leaving money on the table

I loved the instruction that the author provides regarding how an owner of a small business has to be willing (and able) to fire unprofitable clients and customers. Business people who compete on price are playing a fool's game. Smart business owners understand that value is the basis for business exchange and that to be successful at business one must FULLY understand value. This book puts forth a pretty good effort to help the reader fully understand value, or at least how to go about fully understanding value after doing a little investigation and research of the market.

Pricing goods and/or services is far from simple. And setting an optimal price is one of the most difficult decisions to make when starting a business. Furthermore, as a business grows and matures pricing at an optimal level continues to be difficult. Prices never stay the same because demand never stays the same. To do this well one must know the market (competitors & customers), know the costs, know the perceived value, and know the actual value.

Getting a handle on all this is not particularly easy. This is especially true because customers are often times very hard to figure out. Some are price buyers, some are value buyers, some are relationship buyers, and some are poker-playing buyers. Knowing these four types of buyers is a heads up for the small business person. But he or she still has to read the customer and figure out which one of these four the customer is before negotiations can be performed in favor of the seller. Read this book and start on your path of being a better pricer of your services or goods. 5 stars!

Priceless Wisdom From Reed Holden and Mark Burton

The American writer Alfred Kazin remarked that "One writes to make a home for oneself, on paper, in time and in other's minds."

Well, Reed Holden certainly has had a place in my mind since I first read him back in October 1998. His book, co-authored with Thomas T. Nagle, The Strategy and Tactics of Pricing (STP) is a seminal work, adorning the bookshelves of anyone who takes pricing seriously. With this influential book, Holden and Nagle are probably more responsible than any other individuals for putting pricing on the organizational charts of companies around the world.

I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of Reed Holden and Mark Burton's new book, Pricing With Confidence, spending a couple of days after the New Year absorbing its many lessons. Of course, there is no possible way to do justice to this work in such a short space, so instead I will simply share with you some of the more brilliant insights that struck me like a thunderbolt.

In addition to a brief synopsis of the Ten Rules of Engagement, the Introduction starts out with a discussion of the pricing death spiral, a never-ending process whereby the buyer continuously gets the seller to offer more and deeper discounts. A process, the authors teach, with no winners, only survivors. The Ten Rules offered in the book are effective strategies to counter this trap--along with capturing more of the value a company creates.

The Introduction also contains a discussion on "What Is Your Pricing Purpose?" offering this advice: "In Reality, pricing is far from simple. Setting the optimum price is one of the most difficult decisions managers ever make."

Amen. This statement recognizes that pricing is not a science, it is an art; but it's also a skill, meaning the more we do it, the better we get. The authors also suggest that the highest purpose of pricing is to increase profits.

The summary of Rule Two proffers this sage advice: "You can't have confidence in your pricing until you have confidence in the financial value that your offerings create for customers. Even though many managers are convinced they can't get this information, the reality is that most of your customers are eager to tell you. All it takes is asking the right questions and being willing to listen."

Yet how many firms truly understand this? It's much easier to sit around and lament the fact that what they sell is increasingly a "commodity," complaining about the procurement process, and whining that customers simply don't understand the value they create. But that's the cowardly way out, shifting blame and responsibility onto others.

If companies themselves don't take responsibility for comprehending, communicating, creating, convincing and capturing value, who will? How can you change something if you don't accept responsibility for the underlying causes?

The discount habit--what they label discount creep--is usually the result of either selling to customers who don't value what is offered, or a wrong customer to begin with--as they write, "the price isn't wrong; the customer is."

Rule Four identifies four types of customers: price buyers, value buyers, relationship buyers, and a group they call poker-playing buyers. The chapter goes on to discuss strategies--honed by real-world experience--on how to deal with each type that are worth the price of admission.

Lest anyone accuse me of writing a hagiographic review, I don't agree with everything in this book, a source of endless exchanges of emails between Reed and myself.

My biggest disagreement is with Rule Nine: "Take Simple Steps to Move From Cost-Plus to Value-Based Pricing." It's not that I disagree with the necessity of an incremental approach--since the cultural change required for any company to move to real Value Pricing is massive--it by necessity must be incremental.

My issue is with this statement: "There is nothing wrong with cost-plus pricing as long as it does a good job of leveraging the financial value you create for customers." Yet, it's highly unlikely that cost-plus pricing does this, except by coincidence.

My worry with this statement is that some leaders will use it as an excuse to delay, or put off entirely, making the transition to VP. Replacing cost-plus theory with value-based theory is hard enough without some people clinging to any last vestige of the proprietary of the old model, especially from someone as prominent as Reed Holden.

But then they write: "An important point about cost-plus pricing is that most organizations are comfortable with it," all I can say is a lot of people are comfortable being fat, but that doesn't make it optimal. I also reject their notion that "If an organization sharpens the quality of its costing data, it is always in a superior position." And "Applying incremental costing produces what we call value-enhanced cost-plus pricing." Huh? That's a enhanced contradiction in terms--like jumbo shrimp.

But becoming more accurate cost accountants isn't going to make a company become better pricers. Toyota doesn't even use a standard cost accounting system, but rather a process they call target costing.

These technical disagreements aside, they take nothing away from this work--a fantastic book that should be read by anyone who considers themselves serious about creating and capturing value through better pricing. Reed and Mark have created another permanent home in my mind with this work.

Practical steps that will improve pricing - Just do them

Often books written by pricing consultants look at situations and tell the reader "what is possible". Many of these books should have a disclaimer saying "consultants not included" since many times the only way to get results is by hiring consultants.

While those books are rich on methodologies, analyses and frameworks, they are poor on answering the question "So what should I do first thing tomorrow?" That is where Pricing With Confidence comes in.

Reed Holden, one of the pricing community's thought leaders has authored a new book along with Mark Burton, co-founder of Reed's new consulting organization, Holden Advisors. General Managers and people in pricing functions will find this book valuable for several reasons.

First, the authors offer, as they say, ten ways to stop leaving money on the table. Second, the suggestions are immediately actionable without consultants. Third, they will bolster your confidence that, with some intestinal fortitude, change is possible.

The book chapters are devoted to each of the ten ways to stop leaving money on the table. The writing is down-to-earth and easy to read (and, even more important, easy to understand). For those readers who may want to skim the book, they would be well advised to read the introduction that contains an excellent summary of the ten chapters.

This book deserves bookshelf space for people who want to find ways to improve their company's financial performance and are willing to make the necessary incremental changes. There is no silver bullet or magic in Pricing With Confidence. It is a straightforward book that proves, once again, that 80% of success is just showing up (and doing a few things right.)

Good Intro at a Steep Price

OK, it covers the basics in a fairly easy-to-read format and moves right along. It is a well-designed, reader-friendly book, but a bit repetitive. The same statements appear in the intro, in the middle, and in the end summary of each chapter.

I take off one star simply for cost. No way is this intro-level material worth over 100 bucks. This is a $20 book in gold plating.

Another star off for quite a number of spelling errors and other typos and goofs (repeated sentence/para fragment, etc.) that should have been caught in proofreading. Hard to believe these are still being carried along in the THIRD EDITION. These little glitches don't interfere with the usefulness of the book, but given the price, they owe us a PERFECTLY PROOFED text. Everybody else gets it right--why can't this team? And, a working paralegal who made these types of errors could be fired. It's ironic and silly for the book to contain such goofs.

Excellent Overview But Web Resources Tricky

The audience for this book is Paralegals, and the book is ideal for that audience, plus many others for self study as well as thorough refresher reviews for the bar. The author leaves no stone unturned on the coverage front (100%), and on the currency - recency front gets a B+. Coverage of things as current as domain name protection and orphan drugs is thorough and up to date, but the author does not go in depth on the 2011 America Invents Act. I thought the online appendices might, but the online piece is still a nightmare (hopefully to be corrected soon?).

Why a nightmare? Because when you go to the book's site (delmar - cengage), it's mostly ads for paralegal courses and other products. When you finally, after numerous clicks (try putting the author's name in the search box) get to the right site, you will get to the book's page, and then click student resources on the right, it takes you to purchasable flashcards and e resources IF you bought the book there.

Don't confuse THIS book's online experience with the author's web recommendations, however-- she gives awesome and up to date internet resources (all are current and easy to access with very few dead links) WITHIN each chapter. You've probably read about the Chinese hacking our IP-- well, the author shows how to do so legally, for example (p. 256) how to search the copyright office's records. If you have a data mining program like Smartlogic's Semaphore, R - Rattle, or Carrot2, you'll be able to surf the heck out of many government offices with this book's help and numerous, current online resources and addresses.

For reference, I'm the VP of Technology for PayRoy dot com -- our job IS to search patent, copyright, trademark and many other IP databases both public and private. From that perspective, this book is FULL of very important PRACTICAL tips, and ideal for self study. On the other hand, it is not the law school 1,200 page Smith vs. USPTO judicial review text that will teach you detailed IP law. Most of those texts refer you to Lexis Nexis for details anyway, as does this fine text. I was one of the original authors of the Orphan Drug Act, for example, and was tickled pink that the act was covered in some detail, which it's not in some "big" $600 "law school" IP texts!

Don't get me wrong, there are numerous fine and fun case studies peppered throughout all the chapters, and in this edition they are really current. None of the Amazon headings stuff tells you that this is the 4th edition either (at this writing, it just says Edition:Paperback) -- so if you do buy this from an Amazon vendor or Amazon Warehouse Deals used (this is pricey but worth it), be SURE you're getting the most recent edition! Note to MY customers (Engineers and their IP Attorneys): YES, she DOES cover circuits and semiconductors in detail, amazing!

I love this textbook

I usually don't write reviews, but want to write about this textbook as it was really great. So much detail, but so logically connected that it's easy to understand the complex world of trademark, copyright, patents and trade secrets. Some people might say that it's a bit repetitive, but this is what worked great for me, because after reading 10 chapters after learning a concept, reading about the same concept in a different setting made everything easier to comprehend. Thanks to this book I got a huge A in my paralegal IP class.
