I'd recommend it.
By Brian Mendicino
This book is an easy read, and does a great job of explaining many of the basic SQL concepts to the reader. However, the examples in the book are littered with errors. Minor errors usually aren't a big deal, but when you're coding stuff, all it takes is one thing typed incorrectly to ruin whatever it is you're doing. I'm about half way through this book and find something wrong in at least one exercise in every chapter. I've had SQL practice in the past, so I'm able to recognize/work through the errors without too much difficulty, but someone new might not pick up on it being an error and think they've done something wrong.

Flawed but useful SQL book.
By GreyWolf
The best introductory book to SQL that I have seen is Sam's Teach Yourself SQL in 10 minutes. http://www.amazon.com/Minutes-Sams-Teach-Yourself-Edition/dp/0672336073
I highly recommend starting with that book and using SQLite.
Having enjoyed that book, I wanted a bit more in depth version so I picked up this copy. Going into this book, I knew there were typos, but I figured I could work through them. If you can work through other people's mistakes, you generally have a good understanding of the subject.
What I didn't expect, were the amount of issues for everything. It took me a while just to debug the database we are supposed to compile. Even after I worked through the bugs, there were additional items later on in the book that were not in the same data. So yeah, this book has issues.
Note: I used SQL Server for this book, and it could be they wrote the book for some other SQL version and just stated SQL Server will also work.
The organization of this book is also wrong. You do not get to SELECT statements until the 7th chapter. They provide examples of how to perform actions prior to instructing you to create the database; which makes me believe they didn't intend people to follow along as they went. When combined with the numerous typos, even when creating the database, I would be surprised if anyone could use this as their only SQL book and actually be able to learn SQL.
However, this book is not useless. I have found a way to get this book to work for me. It provides a lot of good explanations, but I have learned to not take anything at face value. I test what they are doing and work through this book as a practice exam. By correcting the book as you are progressing through it, you will ensure you are fully understanding the key concepts of SQL. If you started off with the 10 minute book, you will be fine.
Tip: Build a .sql file to wipe away and restore your database. This allows you to do whatever exercise you want, then reset everything to a fresh state.
This book is useful, just not in a normal textbook way.

Read it three times
By Nicole R. Norton
Great intro to SQL if you're interested. You're not really going to learn this in 24 hours, but take your time and read it cover-to-cover at least three times - once for exposure, then a second time to really learn it, and a third time to pick up anything you didn't quite understand until you actually got some real hands-on experience.
