Stephen S. Ilardi, PhD, is associate professor of clinical psychology at the University of Kansas and the author of over 40 professional articles on mental illness. Through his active clinical practice, Dr. Ilardi has treated several hundred depressed patients. He lives with his family in Lawrence, Kansas.

Saved my life when doctors, meds couldn't

I've waited a full year to write this review (literally, I ordered the book 367 days ago!) This book was recommended to me by two extended family members struggling with mild to moderate depression. I had been fighting with SEVERE clinical depression; it robbed me of my life, of enjoying my husband and children. I sought medical, psychological, and psychiatric help for about two years... Several medications, dosage changes, doctors, therapists, etc... Nothing made a dent.
And then I read this book. And everything changed.
His 6 steps gave me something to focus on, other than "being sick." Just the change from seeing Life from a Wellness perspective rather than a Sickness perspective changed so much. Knowing the science behind depression, anxiety, and the brain really gave me reason to work on each step... Getting the kids schlepped to the gym with me, practicing light therapy, forcing myself to keep busy hands/mind by coloring in coloring books (you can even get nicer ones for adults, which help), reading novels, listening to audiobooks... Distracting from my illness, stopping my mind from racing and ruminating.
Fast forward a year. I have lost 40 pounds as a convenient side effect of the exercise (from a size 16 to a size 4), ran 2 half-marathons, and completely changed my life.
Depression is like alcoholism or cancer... Once you have it, you'll always have it to a certain extent, considering yourself "on the wagon" or "in remission". But I continue to take my vitamins/supplements and put in the work to make sure I never go back. I keep a list of the 6 steps taped inside my kitchen cupboard so, if I'm feeling a little off, I can check the list and say "ah, I'm not sleeping well. Time to get outside and soak in some sunlight to set my body clock."
Buy this book. Never, in a million years, did I think I could climb out of the hole Depression had buried me in. I was drowning. I PROMISE this book will work if you just read about the steps and start following them. FORCE yourself to get out of bed and do the work EVERY DAY. No matter what. YOU ARE WORTH THE EFFORT.

Changed my life

I don't usually write reviews here, but I had to spread the word about what a great book this is. It has truly changed my life. I've always had intermittent bouts of moderate to severe depression, probably since I was 16 (I'm 27). Anti-depressants haven't worked for me. I've managed to get by in life, but I'm getting really tired of the constant up and down. Also, I want to have kids soon-ish, but I don't want to put my kids through my crazy. So...

Dr. Ilardi recommends six lifestyle interventions: 1) big daily dose of omega-3 fatty acids, 2) cognitive tricks to stop rumination, 3) exercise, 4) light therapy, 5) social interaction, and 6) healthy sleep. The thing that makes this book so great (and worth buying even though I just revealed the six magic interventions) is that he breaks each one down into small steps that are very doable - even for someone suffering from I-can't-even-muster-the-thought-of-getting-out-of-bed depression. His regimen is 12 weeks long, and the first week, for instance, all you have to do is take some supplements. It builds from there, but very incrementally.

I should mention that while I'm holistically-inclined, I also have a good grasp on science and a research-based education and career, so I tend to be a little skeptical of "cure" type books. But I found this one to be scientifically sound, with an extensive list of references that you can look up if you want to go deeper into the literature.

Overall, I really can't recommend it highly enough. It is EASY to read, which is a must for someone whose brain is freaking out. I ordered the book, gave myself a week to read it and then started the regimen the next week. It has made huge difference already (I'm on week 4), and, most importantly, these are healthy changes that I can make for the rest of my life. I have great hope that these techniques will "even out" my moods in the long-term and really improve quality of life for my family and me. Dr. Ilardi, if you happen to see this, thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Lots of filler with some good common sense advice

This book has some simple, common sense advice and is written in a typical "self-help" style (i.e., a bit of research results and lots of filler anecdotes). It would have made a good magazine article. Keep in mind that there is very little peer reviewed research to back any of this up but I don't see how any of his advice would hurt. Basically, stop stewing and ruminating, and get active. Do instead of think. Increase your exposure to direct sunlight, take large doses of Omega-3 fatty acids, and beef up your social interactions. The less time you spend alone, ruminating, and away from rewarding interactions with people and direct sunlight, the better. Basically this is behavioral activation therapy and some healthy lifestyle advice. If you haven't heard this before, the book is worth getting. I have problems with the title. There is no cure-all for everyone's depression. But you won't go wrong following the author's advice - and it is likely to help you. There is far too much filler here for me. I skipped the repeated, formulaic, "A patient of mine named Jill was having trouble with....she tried my advice to....she had complete relief in 3 weeks.." anecdotes. These are always simplistic stories with miraculous results. They are never clinically designed trials - just the author's word.

Andrew X. Pham was born in Vietnam and raised in California. His father had been a POW of the Vietcong; his family came to America as "boat people." Following the suicide of his sister, Pham quit his job, sold all of his possessions, and embarked on a year-long bicycle journey that took him through the Mexican desert, around a thousand-mile loop from Narita to Kyoto in Japan; and, after five months and 2,357 miles, to Saigon, where he finds "nothing familiar in the bombed-out darkness." In Vietnam, he's taken for Japanese or Korean by his countrymen, except, of course, by his relatives, who doubt that as a Vietnamese he has the stamina to complete his journey ("Only Westerners can do it"); and in the United States he's considered anything but American. A vibrant, picaresque memoir written with narrative flair and an eye-opening sense of adventure, Catfish and Mandala is an unforgettable search for cultural identity.

Pham's captivating first book, which delves fearlessly into questions of home, family, and identity. The son of Vietnamese parents who suffered terribly during the Vietnam War and brought their family to America when he was 10, Pham, on the cusp of his 30s, defied his parents' conservative hopes for him and his engineering career by becoming a poorly paid freelance writer. After the suicide of his sister, he set off on an even riskier path to travel some of the world on his bicycle. In the grueling, enlightening year that followed, he pedaled through Mexico, the American West Coast, Japan, and finally his far-off first land, Vietnam.

The story, with some of a mandala's repeated symbolic motifs, works on several levels at once. It is an exploration into the meaning of home, a descriptive travelogue, and an intimate look at the Vietnamese immigrant experience. There are beautifully illuminated flashbacks to the experience of fleeing Vietnam and to an earlier, more innocent childhood. While Pham's stern father, a survivor of Vietcong death camps, regrets that Pham has not been a respectful Vietnamese son, he also reveals that he wishes he himself had been more "American" for his kids, that he had "taken [them] camping." Catfish and Mandala is a book of double-edged truths, and it would make a fascinating study even in less able hands. In narrating his search for his roots, Vietnamese-American and first-time author Pham alternates between two story lines. The first, which begins in war-torn Vietnam, chronicles the author's hair-raising escape to the U.S. as an adolescent in 1977 and his family's subsequent and somewhat troubled life in California. The second recounts his return to Vietnam almost two decades later as an Americanized but culturally confused young man. Uncertain if his trip is a "pilgrimage or a farce," Pham pedals his bike the length of his native country, all the while confronting the guilt he feels as a successful Viet-kieu (Vietnamese expatriate) and as a survivor of his older sister Chai, whose isolation in America and eventual suicide he did little to prevent. Flipping between the two story lines, Pham elucidates his main dilemma: he's an outsider in both America and VietnamAin the former for being Vietnamese, and the latter for being Viet-kieu. Aside from a weakness for hyphenated compounds like "people-thick" and "passion-rich," Pham's prose is fluid and fast, navigating deftly through time and space. Wonderful passages describe the magical qualities of catfish stew, the gruesome preparation of "gaping fish" (a fish is seared briefly in oil with its head sticking out, but is supposedly still alive when served), the furious flow of traffic in Ho Chi Minh City and his exasperating confrontations with gangsters, drunken soldiers and corrupt bureaucrats. In writing a sensitive, revealing book about cultural identity, Pham also succeeds in creating an exciting adventure story. (Oct.)

Here he recounts his return--by bicycle, as he wheels up the West Coast, boards a plane, and finds himself at the airport in Saigon, cursing out the "nitwits in flip-flops" who wrecked his bike. Interesting perspective to a very adventurous journey

This was a great story I had not read a book for awhile and during my Vietnam War summer course we were assigned this reading. It was a quick read for me as I got into the book very fast. The story is interesting and gives a unique perspective to a very adventurous return to war torn country in search of origin. If you want to read about the Vietnam war and its lasting effects on the Vietnamese I would check this book out.

A home revisited.

An Pham's picaresque adventure of rediscovery is a search, not only for the ghosts of a homeland lost but also for a self contained ephemeral, perhaps incipient, a search for meaning, a place in a complex geography of hearts and homes. Having recently ttyl8r Lynn traveled Vietnam, from Saigon to Hanoi with a side trip to Cambodia, much of the story had the ring of the somewhat familiar. Still, the Vietnam Pham reveals in this story is one I could never see, could not hope to glimpse without a tour guide of the searching soul. Vietnam is a beautiful, bustling, confusing and contradictory place. The soul of the Vietnamese emigrant returning, even more so.

This s book is a very good read. Hours spent without h a soul, so different from ones daily American life yet so achingly familiar in it's longing to find a home, a familiar face, a sense of belonging rewards beyond measure. I highly recommend commend this book and a visit to it's source.

Mesmerizing and extremely well-crafted!

Very impressive:
1. Interesting subject matter: Vietnam and Vietnamese-Americans, past and present

2. Lively writing style: flowing, vivid and often poetic, though it does sometimes briefly lurch into Henry Miller-esque indulgence/floridity, and

3. Narrative structure: a travelogue intercut with flashbacks to childhood memories of living in Vietnam, fleeing Vietnam, transitioning to life in the US; reconstructed accounts of his father's time at a Communist "re-education camp" and his mother's shady side business up to the end of the war, and the cultural tensions and transformations within his immediate and extended family of Vietnamese immigrants living in the US.

It all blends together into a rich and absorbing novel that I couldn't put down, but finished in one weekend.

The narrative structure of this book is highly effective in creating suspense and tension, such that it could easily be turned into a screenplay and a film; it is probable that the author and/or editor had that in mind all along. Therefore it's easy to imagine that a fair number of embellishments and poetic liberties have likely been taken in order to attract and maintain reader interest. Not exactly unheard of in the fast-growing memoir genre, btw.

It is worth noting that Mr. Pham's journey to Vietnam probably happened sometime in the early to mid 1990s, as the book was published only in 1999. I can say that having visited Vietnam twice in the last five months (2010-2011) and found the country to be not quite as dire as he describes as far as glaring poverty, corruption, prostitution, etc. are concerned. Having talked with many Viet Kieu (Vietnamese who live or grew up outside of Vietnam but come back to visit or work), it is clear however that white Western tourists are indeed treated very differently (i.e. much better) by the local population than the Viet Kieu who often trigger greed, envy and hostility especially outside of the two main cities, Saigon and Hanoi.

All in all, there is plenty here to keep any reader turning pages---not just Vietnamese or Vietnamese-American readers. I look forward to reading Mr. Pham's newest book as well.

More for the readie than the foodie

I checked out this book from my local library after having heard author, Matthew Gavin Frank, interviewed on NPR. After hearing him describe the Upper Peninsula of Michigan's iconic pasty and the making of the "crab" in ersatz-sushi California Rolls, I was convinced this would be a fascinating book. Indeed, I suppose it is, if you're more into flowery prose than food. I wasn't and found the book painful to read. Here's an excerpt: "Violence is geology, is eating, is turning one fish into another [that's violence?], is whipping our bodies through the air. Gravity whimpers, but wins. Here ocean commingles with desert. I wonder which the rice, which the avocado, which the imitation crab...Here, is the sort of environmental cassoulet that evokes an identity crisis and shift, dueling regional banjos plucking their dissonance in the same case. California."

I toyed with ending this brief review with some literary extravaganza of words, but I'll leave it at this. Read this because you enjoy flowery, somewhat unconventional writing rather than because you want to learn about iconic state foods.

Waiter -- Send this Back to the Chef!

Instructions: re-heat this common and not-very-unique recipe for yet another book on food regionalism (a state-by-state selection of the most "characteristic" or stereotypical local foods and specialty cuisines). Mix in a healthy dollop of questionable history. Fold in generous portions of generalities, over-simplifications, irrelevancies, and personal biases. Sprinkle throughout with gratuitous profanity and unnecessary vulgarities (to taste). Wrap the entire mixture in a puff pastry of over-inflated writing and pompous pontification. Bake in a lukewarm oven. Serve to the unsuspecting.

If you're looking for a cookbook, a serious book on food, or an accurate history of food in American culture, "The Mad Feast: An Ecstatic Tour Through America's Food" is one Cook's Tour short of a Happy Meal. Over-written, under-researched, and poorly presented for the discriminating reader's plate. I thought the author's section on my own native state (North Carolina) was both inaccurate and offensive. A subsequent read through a half-dozen other states and the author's food selections confirmed the book's three primary ingredients -- an over-used premise, annoying verbosity, and feeble attempt to amuse or offend.

Savor "The Mad Feast" with a healthy glass of bicarbonate of soda.

I feel like with lots of books

This book is INSUFFERABLE. I feel like with lots of books, if you don't like it, it's easy to put down--but this book goes beyond that and creates active frustration. The problem is, you can still flip to the last page of each chapter and use it as a kind of cookbook (certain recipes would be nearly impossible to make, given that they are based around items available only locally, but I feel like that is completely expected for a book of this type) and it's cool and interesting. However, as I browse the recipes, I am left curious about the history of the dish, why it was chosen, who eats it, etc. Unfortunately, the chapter that precedes each recipe is an overwritten, confusing mess, written more like a personal therapy diary than a look at regional food. If the answers to my questions are in each chapter, I get frustrated and give up long before I find them. And it just keeps tricking me. I keep wanting to cook something from the book, and get mad about the prose all over again. Don't get sucked in like me! I read these reviews and though "Oh, they're exaggerating, it'll be fun, and I can still use it to cook," but that's the problem. The recipes aren't worth it, you'll be left frustrated and with more questions than answers.

About the Author
Issac Moisevitch Yaglom graduated from Sverdlovsk University in 1942 and received his Candidate's Degree in 1945. He then moved onto the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute since 1957 and is the author of many scientific publications.

Problem solving for Olympians

The Yaglom geometric transformation books are aimed at a mathematical Olympiad audience. The books are not primarily about transformations, they are mainly about how to use transformations to solve problems. Yaglom wrote the book in Russian back in the fifties, presenting geometrical transformations techniques to geometric problem solving. He introduces transformation types and then shows how they can be used to solve problems that otherwise would sometimes be almost unsolvable using elementary (synthetic) methods. Then he presents a set of problems that vary from difficult to fiendish. Full solutions are provided, you will need them. The Russian book has chapters on congruence, similarity and projective transformations that are contained in the three English translations published by the MAA. It continues with sections on inversion transformations that are not (yet?) translated into English.

This is the first of three books, it deals with congruence transformations. Examples of congruence transformations are reflections in a line or in a point and translations (parallel movements). One could make up a set of problems that can be solved by simply applying a convenient transformation, but that is not how Yaglom works. Most problems use one ore more other themes (tricks) besides a transformation. So let this not be your first geometry problem book.

Excellent step-by-step introduction to transformations

This book (first of three) is an excellent step-by-step introduction to some geometric transformations (in this volume: translations, reflections, and rotations) in the synthetic style (i.e., no algebra). The exercises are very good and full solutions are given to all. Lots of drawings to make everything easy to understand.

I'm using this book to 'reintroduce' myself to geometry after being away from the study of mathematics for many years and it is great fun.

As part of the New Mathematical Library it is ideal for the advanced high school student or the enthusiast/amateur (like me).

Transformations Review.

This is an excellent introduction to geometric transformations. It is very useful for Competitions such as the AIME USAMO and IMO. Also, it is a great book for those interested in Mathematics.
