There are no tricks in this book, but lots of great information about magic and magicians. It is beautifully illustrated to boot.

A very good history of Conjuring

... I bought this book about six or seven years ago after reading it at the library. It is honestly one of the best books EVER written on the subject. The people that didn't like it were expecting James Randi to give out the secrets of magic, which understandably (and I believe correctly), he does not do because of the nature of his profession. I agree with him not to give out the secrets of many years of hard work, and commend him on his knowledge of magic, both past and present.
This book is meant as a history of the craft and not as a "learn magic tricks book". If you would care to look at the cover of the book, in not so small print it states "Being a Definitive History of the Venerable Arts of Sorcery, Prestidigitation, Wizardry, etc.." In no place on the cover does it mention learning magic tricks or revealing the secrets of the trade.
So please, for all the conjurers, magic historians, and anyone else who enjoys the craft in this world. You CAN learn about magic and enjoy this book immensely. I think it's safe to say that you will.

Several reviewers seem to think this book is about learning magic tricks, but it's actually about an insider's remembrance of some great performers. Randi combines facts in stories in an entertaining way that gives readers more than just a list of famous magicians, but also some insight of what it was it was like to be a performer during the great age of magic.

A great over view of basic graphic design.

I really enjoyed looking at this book. Towards the beginning the information is great, but I especially liked the second half where many samples of work was provided. I believe the best way to learn is to continuously look at different designs from throughout the world, and many samples from Europe and Asia were provided.

The reason why the book didn't receive a 5 star rating was because it's not really a guide, but more of an overview. Don't expect to have practices from this book, it's mostly information and samples.

Overall, I really enjoyed it and would recommend buying it if you're starting out in the design industry!

Great book, but...

I love the Rockport series of graphic design books. Drool-worthy eye candy all, but a MAJOR bone to pick. What's with the teeny-tiny type? Is layout more important than content? Does style trump purpose? One needs a magnifying glass to read anything. What's the point, then of having text on the page to read? Or maybe it's not meant to be read, but oggled? I sadly returned my copy. Sadly, I hesitate to purchase any further Rockport publications.

Sweet and Concise

So what if it's not a workbook. The content more than makes up for the misname. This book is designed for people that are annoyed by those books filled with "content", that really only repeat the same thing over and over again. This book was written in a brief concise writing style and, to me, that is priceless. That title says layout workbook, but in reality it deals with more than just that. It deals with design process, which is very important for every designer, the overall mentality of what a designer should think like, and most of the fundamentals that all designers should come to learn in their long and hard design journey. Most people that write 5 star reviews only say things like it's a great book or truly wonderful, which I find very useless. Nonetheless, it's a great book, and I strongly recommend you get a copy as it will change the way you view design, especially if you starting out, or find yourself being an auto-didactic person. Thanks to this book I'll be starting my freelance carrier soon.

About the Author

Marilyn Stokstad, teacher, art historian, and museum curator, has been a leader in her field for decades and has served as president of the College Art Association and the International Center of Medieval Art.� In 2002, she was awarded the lifetime achievement award from the National Women’s Caucus for Art.� In 1997, she was awarded the Governor’s Arts Award as Kansas Art Educator of the Year and an honorary degree of doctor of humane letters by Carleton College.� She is Judith Harris Murphy Distinguished Professor Emerita at the University of Kansas, Lawrence.� She has also served in various leadership capacities at the University’s Spencer Museum of Art and is Consultative Curator of Medieval Art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri

Michael W. Cothren is Professor of Art History at Swarthmore College, where he has also served as Art Department Chair, Coordinator of Medieval Studies, and Divisional Chair of the Humanities.� Since arriving at Swarthmore in 1978, he has taught specialized courses on Medieval, Roman, and Islamic art and architecture, as well as seminars on theory and method, but he most enjoys teaching the survey to Swarthmore beginners.� His research and publications focus on French Gothic art and architecture, most recently in a book on the stained glass of Beauvais Cathedral entitled Picturing the Celestial City.� Michael is consultative curator of medieval stained glass at the Glencairn Museum in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. He has served on the board of the International Center of Medieval Art and as President both of the American Committee of the International Corpus Vitrearum and of his local school board. When not teaching or engaged in art historical research, you can finding him hiking in the red rocks around Sedona, Arizona.

I bought this book for a college course in art history, and the book really helps me along because it has so many details about the art as well as the history (it says "brief," but there's still a lot in it). I haven't yet read it all of the way through, but I know I'm going to enjoy this course because of the book!

Good Art Book

I got it as a necessity for an art history class I'm taking. Overall, it is a great book. The chapters aren't too lengthy, cover good information and are rather fun to read. They have good examples of art works with plenty of pictures. While the price is a bit high, the book is good.

I love the eText

I can say I have never opened the actual book, I've only read the eText on my iPad. I like being able to do pre-test and flashcards online too. I think that these extra features are things that should be GIVEN with every college book, not things that are an extra purchase!

Worth the extra money to get MySearchLab add-on

This is a remarkable wealth of info in one place. It glosses perhaps a little too much over certain philosophers; there are signature favorites in the text. Despite that, it covers the history of philosophy quite adequately and much of the content is clips, excerpts, and chapters from philosophy's most hallowed texts. This alone makes it a genuine source of philosophical erudition. Contained in this package was a MySearchLab account that addends this source in a massive way. My class didn't require it, but I went for it anyway. It has revealed a massive library of free audio and text downloads and additional knowledge on the subject. This is a great value. As Bertrand Russell might suggest, find your inarticulate certainly replaced by articulate doubt with the help of this content.

This woman's writing is excellent. She has such a way with words and her adventures are so interesting. I was in New York when she was, but not in Greenwich Village. How different were our experiences. We both went to the world's fair in 1964 though. Her second book, "Waiting for the M Train" is even better. Who cares that she can sing too!

About the Author
Steve Rabin is a Principal Software Engineer at Nintendo of America, where he researches new techniques for Nintendo's next generation systems, develops tools, and supports Nintendo developers. Before Nintendo, Steve worked primarily as an AI engineer at several Seattle start-ups including Gas Powered Games,WizBang Software Productions, and Surreal Software. He managed and edited the AI Game Programming Wisdom series of books, as well as the book Introduction to Game Development, and has over a dozen articles published in the Game Programming Gems series. He's spoken at the Game Developers Conference and moderates the AI roundtables. Steve teaches artificial intelligence at both the University of Washington Extension and at the DigiPen Institute of Technology. He earned a B.S. in computer engineering and an M.S. in computer science, both from the University of Washington.

A fantastic "a la carte" tool kit

Being in the game development business, I am always on the lookout for new and different tricks, techniques and strategies. When most programmers go to the lectures, panels and roundtables at the Game Developers Conference, we are looking to pick up this same sort of material... we share ideas and approaches - but rarely get the chance to get down to the code details to make it easy for us to implement those ideas into our own work. This book makes that possible.
Along the lines of the other "Gems" series of books, this collection is filled with ACTUAL techniques and code chunks that are used by some of the top professionals in the industry. Just flipping through the list of the contributors to the book is like going around the room at one of the AI roundtables at the GDC... in fact, Steve Woodcock and Neil Kirby are 2 of the "3 AI guys" that RUN those roundtables! (The 3rd being Eric Dybsand who has contributed to the "Gems" series but not this title.)
Many books on game development are informative. This one is actually USEFULL. I have personally adopted Steve Rabin's source code from the section "Implementing a State Machine Language" into my own game and it has saved me many hours of development and improved the readability and understandability of my code for the rest of the team. Just that section alone has netted at least a 1000:1 return on the cost of this book. Other sections have given me a different approach on how to handle the economic strategy layer that I could have come upon myself... but was able to implement a lot quicker than if I had done it myself. It was definately worth the price.
Are any of these sections worth the purchase price for YOU? I suppose that depends on how much you value you your time. Once you equate the cost of the book to the man hours you save, it's a no brainer!

Up to date coverage of all things AI. Highly recommended.

Written in the same format as the Game Programming Gems books this book should be the first thing you buy if you're serious about AI. Well written and edited by some of today's most knowledgable AI programmers the topics covered include path planning, race AI, team tactics, finite state machines, scripting etc. The path planning section of the book alone is priceless. I did feel there may have been a little overlap with some of the AI sections in the Game Programming Gems books and one or two pearls of wisdom could have been expanded upon but other than that it was hard to fault the book. Therefore, get it! Read it! Treasure it!

About the Author
Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin was born in Moscow in 1799. He was liberally educated and left school in 1817. Given a sinecure in the Foreign Office, he spent three dissipated years in St Petersburg writing light, erotic and highly polished verse. He flirted with several pre-Decembrist societies, composing the mildly revolutionary verses which led to his disgrace and exile in 1820. After traveling through the Caucasus and the Crimea, he was sent to Bessarabia, where he wrote The Captive of the Caucasus and The Fountain at Bakhchisaray, and began Eugene Onegin. His work took an increasingly serious turn during the last year of his southern exile, in Odessa. In 1824 he was transferred to his parents’ estate at Mikhaylovskoe in north-west Russia, where he spent two solitary but fruitful years during which he wrote his historical drama Boris Godunov, continued Eugene Onegin and finished The Gipsies. After the failure of the Decembrist Revolt in 1825 and the succession of a new tsar, Pushkin was granted conditional freedom in 1826. During the next three years he wandered restlessly between St Petersburg and Moscow. He wrote an epic poem, Poltava, but little else. In 1829 he went with the Russian army to Transcaucasia, and the following year, stranded by a cholera outbreak at the small family estate of Boldino, he wrote his experimental Little Tragedies in blank verse and The Tales of Belkin in prose, and virtually completed Eugene Onegin. In 1831 he married the beautiful Natalya Goncharova. The rest of his life was soured by debts and the malice of his enemies. Although his literary output slackened, he produced his major prose works The Queen of Spades and The Captain’s Daughter, his masterpiece in verse, The Bronze Horseman, important lyrics and fairy tales, including The Tale of the Golden Cockerel. Towards the end of 1836 anonymous letters goaded Pushkin into challenging a troublesome admirer of his wife to a duel. He was mortally wounded and died in January1837.

Ronald Wilks studied Russian language and literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, and later Russian literature at London University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1972. He has also translated ‘The Little Demon’ by Sologub and, for Penguin Classics, My Childhood, My Apprenticeship and My Universities by Gorky, The Golovlyov Family by Saltykov-Shchedrin and four volumes of stories by Chekhov: The Kiss and Other Stories, The Duel and Other Stories, The Party and Other Stories and The Fianc�e and Other Stories.

19th century Russian Lit begins here

This small collection of Pushkin's prose writings presents an admirable sample of the diversity of subject matter of the man considered to be the first great Russian writer whose reputation transcended national boundaries. But Pushkin constantly reminds us that in no way is he a pioneer -- one of the most remarkable things these stories display is their author's reverent awareness of his lesser-known antecedents, effectively providing a chronological and artistic link with obscure names from the Russian and other European bodies of literature.
The "Tales of Belkin" sacrifice realism for plot devices that are either dramatic (a revisited duel in "The Shot," a repentant Prodigal Daughter in "The Postmaster"), contrived (mistaken identity in "The Blizzard," impersonation in "The Squire's Daughter"), or grotesque (a reveling coffin builder gets what he asks for in "The Undertaker"). These stories are clearly among the roots of the genre that was later to be embellished stylishly by the likes of Chekhov and Maupassant.
The "History" chronicling the strange customs of the village of Goryukhino is fashioned so wryly and whimsically, its effect so subtly humorous, that one wonders about the seriousness of Pushkin's intent. "Kirdzhali" is a concise but meaty tale of a rogue warrior and escape artist, while "Egyptian Nights" tells of an Italian balladeer in St. Petersburg desperately in search of an audience.
But the supreme achievement in this collection is "A Journey to Arzrum," in which Pushkin describes his passage from Moscow south through the Caucasus and Georgia towards Turkey during the 1829 war between the latter country and Russia. Replete with anecdotes involving the inhabitants of and the travelers through these exotic, isolated regions, the architecture of the cities, and the wonders of the scenery, the "Journey" is journalistic adventure writing at its finest.
Pushkin finishes his picaresque memoir on a decidedly unheroic note, however, when on his return journey he happens to see an insultingly negative review of one of his published poems in a Russian periodical. As his momentary vexation turns to sarcastic laughter, he confirms a sense of humor and humility that, however uncharacteristic it may seem for a young Russian writer of his day, is thoroughly apparent in his personality as a storyteller.

A Hidden Gem!

You deserve to treat yourself to Alexander Pushkin's style of writing. This collection of short stories is phenomenal. After reading one, you can't imagine the next one being as good but they are and the variety is just as much of a pleasant surprise.

I was reluctant to read Russian literature because of my eastern European upbringing which was heavily overcast with the cloud of World War II. But I'm so glad that I did because it's a treat to read each story and have a positive experience so frequently during the course of reading a book. And this particular translator, Ronald Wilks, really seemed to get the author's personality and style accurately and did not infuse too much of his own.

THis is a really good, really well translated volume of Pushkin's writings... I got it for a good winter read, and wasnot disappointed. If you've never read Pushkin because you thought it too difficult, or heard it was hard to get into, THIS BOOK will change that perception - Don't believe the people saying this is too difficult to read, start one of the stories - give yourself 5 pages - and you won't put it down.

Powerful and personal story of Jesus' faithfulness in the midst of overwhelming pain

History books as well as numerous biographies and even some classic fiction remind us of America’s painful history of slavery and the long, bitter years after emancipation. This morning’s headlines force us to admit that domestic violence and all forms of abuse run rampant behind closed doors. But in her book, Flames of Cold Fire, Ivoril Snow, confronts readers with the full emotional impact of these often concealed situations.

The story opens in first person on the day of Liza’s birth in 1958. But very quickly, in order to give the reader full scope, her mother’s voice takes over. Nora, an African American woman, outlines her courtship with Liza’s father, a brash and unpredictable man. It’s clear to the reader even before the wedding that the marriage will not be a pleasant one.

Nora continues the story. She tells of bearing 15 children to this man with a schizophrenic personality. She suffered the hurt of his infidelity, neglect and physical violence, determined not to leave her husband because she had been told, “Whatever your husband do, no matter how much it hurt, you always be a good wife and do good by your man. You should always wash, cook and clean and when he wants you to come to bed, you do it. The Bible says a man is the head of his house. Don’t you talk about you gonna hold yourself back from him for any reason, a man has much right to his wife’s body.”

That quote from Nora’s mother sets the tone for the whole story. Even when the narrative voice shifts to Liza, the theme of oppression and forced submission continues. Whether the subject is race relations and Liza’s attempts at equality among her peers or discrimination against her as a woman, from all sides Liza faces the same challenge—she is never allowed to believe that she is valuable and loved.

But Jesus is unlike any other man. It is her faith in Jesus Christ and steadfast commitment to follow Him that finally sets Liza free from the cruel dominance of other people. At times, even her family refuses to associate with her, but clinging to God’s promises she finds hope for restoration and a better future.

The fullness of Liza’s story is difficult to read. It’s hard to imagine that one woman could face so many trials and shoulder so much pain without giving up. Flames of Cold Fire will encourage many readers who find themselves in seemingly hopeless situations.

Ivoril Snow is definitely the one to watch. Flames Of Cold fire is deeply rooted in the rural south and exposes the ghosts of the past that still haunt society today. It is raw and unapologetic. Skillfully written and you will crave the next sentence like the air you breathe. l truly look forward to more from this amazing author. My only question is why didn't she grace us with this creative talent sooner? Keep them coming.

Amazing Reading

Flames of Cold Fire is one of the most inspiring books that I have read. It is an amazing book and it was hard to put it down. It tells the story of a spiritually strong young woman who had to endure extremely difficult challenges in her life. She is a perfect example of putting her trust in Heavenly Father when life gets hard, and being strengthen in her tests of life because of her unwavering faith.
