Sardonic Dark Comedy

If you are familiar with John Gregory Dunne only through the novel and movie "True Confessions" you owe it to yourself to find a copy of this underrated, bleakly funny novel. Dutch Shea, Jr. is a down-on-his-luck lawyer with a bitter ex-wife, a beloved daughter murdered by terrorists, and a few secrets he would rather keep private. Over the course of a few days his existence is turned inside out when the true facts of his life are unburied (quite litterally, in the case of his dead father.) You will come to feel for Dutch as he struggles to keep from going under. Dunne makes despair comic, and when you finish this dark story, perversely, you will feel much better.

Ulysses in Hartford

This is an interesting variant of the techniques James Joyce uses in Ulysses-- stream of consciousness, parodies of catechism, journalese, etc. It also displays Joyce's fascination with scatology, decay, death etc. Dunne is a vigorous writer, but I don't think the Joyce influence works that well for him because he lacks Joyce's poetic sense of place-- Ulysses really brings Dublin to life, whereas Hartford, Connecticut, mixed with some Los Angeles just sort of sits there in this novel. I prefer Dunne's less derivative work, where his screenwriters' talent for dialogue and anecdote has more play.

Found and Lost

As funny as it is dark, Dutch Shea Jr. is a work of art. If follows a man down as his life collapses in upon itself from the sheer weight of un-examination surrendering to examination. Anyone who has swept life under their rug only to suddenly find the carpet unable to hold back the truth will connect strongly with Dutch Shea Jr. and his unraveling past as prologue. In less skilled hands than the great Mr. Dunne the heft of these horrors might seem maudlin or trite yet in his grasp these toxic plates are spun into comedic gold. This is my favorite book. Neither the best written nor the deepest but instead, Dutch Shea Jr. is the most like life at its' worst. Funny amidst horror and hopeful beyond hope. I read it almost yearly as it both places my own life in context and reminds me that art like life is less about perfection than aspiration.
